Following the international break, African players resumed their impressive form across European leagues.

England

Jordan Ayew and Nicolas Jackson were on target as Chelsea secured a 2-1 win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

The Blues started the game comfortably and that paid off in the 15th minute as they took the lead thanks to their Senegalese import.

Jackson got the better of Wout Faes before receiving the ball from Enzo Fernandez and firing past goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.

Fernandez doubled the advantage for the Londoners in the 75th minute, however Ghanaian star Ayew reduced the deficit with barely the last kick of the game.

Leicester won a penalty following Romeo Lavia’s foul on Bobby De Cordova-Reid, with the former Crystal Palace man stepping up to beat goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

At the Craven Cottage, Alex Iwobi put Fulham ahead yet they suffered a 4-1 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Buoyed by their first league win before the international break, Wolves travelled to London with the ambition of building on that.

However, it was the Nigeria international who drew the first blood and curled home a sublime strike into the far corner of Jose Sa after 20 minutes.

Matheus Cunha restored parity for the visitors in the 31st minute before Joao Gomes put the visiting side ahead for the first time with his 53rd-minute beauty.

With three minutes left on the clock, Cunha completed his brace while Goncalo Guedes added the icing on the cake in stoppage time with a fourth, to lift Wolves out of the relegation zone for the first time this season.

In another English top-flight fixture, Arsenal overpowered Nottingham Forest 3-0 to extend their unbeaten home run to nine games.

After Jurrien Timber had his fifth minute effort chalked off for offside, Bukayo Saka put the Gunners ahead in the 15th minute by drilling an unstoppable shot past Matz Sels after exchanging passes with Martin Odegaard.

Six minutes before the hour mark, super-sub Thomas Partey doubled the hosts’ advantage after he was teed up by Saka before Anglo-Nigerian Ethan Nwaneri added a third in the 86th minute.

Mohamed Salah continued with his impressive goalscoring run in the 2024-25 campaign with his brace powering Liverpool to a 3-2 away win at Southampton.

Dominik Szoboszlai had given the Reds a 30th minute lead before Adam Armstrong restored parity for the Saints after initially missing from the penalty spot.

In the 56th minute, Southampton took the lead for the first time through Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

Undeterred, Liverpool secured all points at stake through the Egyptian star who found the net twice in the 65th and 83rd minute respectively.

Italy

Ademola Lookman continues to accentuate his relevance in Atalanta’s squad win a goal in their 3-1 away win at Parma.

Mateo Retegui needed just four minutes to break the deadlock, heading home his 12th league goal of the season after connecting with Raoul Bellanova’s inviting cross.

Lookman thought he had doubled his team’s advantage moments later, but his strike was chalked off for offside.

In the 39th minute, Matteo Ruggeri set up Ederson who tapped in from close range before the hosts pulled one back through Matteo Cancellieri very early in the second half.

The Nigerian sealed the win for the home side in the 75th minute by blasting the ball home from Juan Cuadrado’s inch-perfect delivery.

In Rome, Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru registered his name on the scorer’s list in Lazio’s 3-0 triumph over 10-man Bologna.

The former Manchester City prodigy added the third goal for Marco Baroni’s side in the closing seconds of the game to complement Samuel Gigot and Mattia Zaccagni’s efforts.

Turkey

David Akintola delivered two crucial assists in Rizespor’s gritty 2-1 victory over Eyupspor.

The Nigerian winger arrived at the Eyup Stadium fresh off scoring in his previous match against Trabzonspor.

Nevertheless, it was the hosts who took the lead after 27 minutes through Ahmed Kutucu who got the better of goalkeeper Ivo Grbic.

However, the visitors restored parity in the 56th minute after Akintola set up Bosnian midfielder Dal Varesanovic. 20 minutes later, he was available to assist Gambia international Ali Sowe for the winner.

Despite playing a man less following the dismissal of Amir Hadziahmetovic for a serious foul play, Rizespor held their nerves to pick their fourth win in their last five outings.

Another exciting matchup in the Turkish Super Lig saw Morocco international Youssef En Nesyri scored once in Fenerbahce overpowered Kayserispor 6-2 in an eight-goal thriller.

At the Gaziantep Stadium, former Nigeria U23 striker David Okereke got a goal in Gaziantep’s 3-0 win against Basaksehir.
