The Texas Longhorns ranked No. 1 in the preseason AP Top 25 poll for the first time in the football program's history.

Texas beat out Penn State (No. 2) and reigning national champions Ohio State (No. 3) after receiving 25 first-place votes.

Penn State fell just short with 23, which is still the most for the program dating back to 1997 - the same year they entered the season at No. 1.

Last year's runner-ups in the Notre Dame Fighting Irish didn't receive a single first-place vote.
