Tyrann Mathieu announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday in what New Orleans Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis called a "surprise."

The 33-year-old safety, also called "Honey Badger," signed a restructured deal with the Saints that would keep him on the team through the upcoming season, potentially earning $7.2 million.

Mathieu was selected in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals, where he spent the first five years of his career, earning his first All-Pro selection.

He would go on to post 308 tackles and 11 interceptions with the Cards, including 28 tackles for loss - he never had more than eight for any other team the rest of his career.

He would then play a full season with the Houston Texans before ultimately signing with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019 on a three-year, $42 million deal.

In his time with the Chiefs, Mathieu set a career high with six interceptions in a season (2020), was selected to a couple more All-Pro Teams, and was part of the 2020 Super Bowl team.

After his time in Kansas City, he finished his career in New Orleans, where he set a career high of 91 tackles in his first of three seasons.

One of the game's best safeties over the past decade finished his successful career with 838 tackles, 100 pass deflections, 45 tackles for loss, 36 interceptions, and 11 sacks, being named to the Hall of Fame's All-2010s Team.
