In what was a surprising turn of events, Eli Apple has signed with the San Francisco 49ers, according to his agency. The parties agreed to a one-year contract, bringing the cornerback to the NFC West team.

At the time of writing, the 49ers have not made any announcement on the signing. Instead, Apple's agency made a post on social media.

The former Ohio State Buckeye turns 30 on 9 August, and will be playing with his seventh different NFL squad. He spent last season with the Los Angeles Chargers. However, he played in just five games total, including one playoff game. A hamstring injury curtailed his time with the Chargers.

Apple was selected 10th overall in the 2016 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. After spending three years with the team, he moved on to the New Orleans Saints for two years, then a year with NFC South rivals Carolina Panthers. He then switched over to the AFC, playing with the Cincinnati Bengals (2021-22) and Miami Dolphins (2023) before his one-year stay in LA with the Chargers.

The 49ers struggled with injuries last year, finishing with a 6-11 record, bottom of the NFC West. They will begin the 2025 season on the road against their divisional rivals, the Seattle Seahawks, on 7 September.
