The Kansas City Chiefs are set to make offensive lineman (OL) Trey Smith the highest-paid guard in the history of the NFL.

The Chiefs are finalising a four-year extension with Smith worth $94 million that would see him guaranteed $70 million, according to the NFL.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took to social media soon after news of the 26-year-old's new deal broke around media outlets, seemingly pleased about the retention:

A sixth-round draft steal in 2021, Smith has started 80 games - 13 in the playoffs. He has only missed one game in four seasons and is a two-time Super Bowl champion.

Smith made his Pro Bowl debut in 2024 and was a top-tier run-blocker in the NFL last season.

While he may not be one of the most important pieces in the Chiefs' pass protection plan, his new deal is evidence of the impact he has on the field, which is only echoed in Mahomes' post.
