The New York Giants have released Daniel Jones (27) after the quarterback requested it, the NFL team announced Friday.

The Giants announced that they would bench Jones for backup Tommy DeVito, following their 20-17 overtime defeat against the Carolina Panthers earlier this month in Munich. They are coming off a bye week and play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Jones was moved to QB4 on the depth chart and even sent down to the scout team.

"Daniel came to me this morning and asked if we wanted to fire him. We mutually agreed that that would be best for him and for the team," Giants owner John Mara said in a statement.

"We are all disappointed in how things turned out. We have a lot of respect for Daniel and appreciate him tremendously."

'Disappointing for everyone'

Jones has struggled all season with 2,070 passing yards, seven interceptions and only eight touchdowns. He openly speculated about his future, telling reporters on Thursday,

"This season has been disappointing for everyone and of course, I wish I could have done more."

The release of Jones by the Giants leaves a $47.1 million dead cap hit for the 2024 season and a $22.2 million dead cap hit for the 2025 season. This also frees up $19.4 million in cap space for the G-men. Jones was only 27 games into a four-year $160 million contract he signed in 2023.
