The 2026 Australian Open is here! And the new year's first day of Grand Slam tennis features some massive names, with Venus Williams and Carlos Alcaraz headlining a blockbuster Sunday night in Melbourne.

12:39 CET - Anastasia Potapova and Zhuoxuan Bai have advanced in Melbourne after wins over Suzan Lamens and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, respectively.

12:15 CET - Despite taking the opening set, Venus Williams is out of the Australian Open in the first round, with the 45-year-old losing to Olga Danilovic in a closely-fought contest, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4.

Meanwhile, on the men's side of the tournament, Cameron Norrie has come out on top in a topsy-turvy clash against Benjamin Bonzi, with the Brit winning in five sets, 6-0, 6-7(2), 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

11:17 CET - The mercurial Alexander Bublik has sealed his place in the next round, with the Kazakh proving too strong for Jenson Brooksby in a relatively routine 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 triumph.

Germany's Yannick Hanfmann is also through, courtesy of a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) win over Zachary Svajda.

10:33 CET - Women's top seed Aryna Sabalenka is through to the second round in Melbourne after she battled through a competitive opening set to eventually overwhelm Tiantsoa Sarah Rakotomanga Rajaonah 6-4, 6-1.

The two-time former Australian Open champion will face either Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or Zhuoxuan Bai next.

09:38 CET - American qualifier Michael Zheng has clinched his first-ever Grand Slam victory after surviving a spirited comeback from Sebastian Korda to prevail 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(0), 6-3.

09:32 CET - Frances Tiafoe is safely through to the second round in Melbourne thanks to a 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-2 triumph over home favourite Jason Kubler.

08:07 CET - Turkish qualifier Zeynep Sonmez has secured a mightily impressive 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory over 11th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, while Hailey Baptiste has also moved into the second round after a 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-3 win against compatriot Taylor Townsend.

The first Grand Slam of the season began a few hours ago, with men's third seed Alexander Zverev coming from a set down to beat Gabriel Diallo 6-7(1), 6-1, 6-4, 6-2, while on the women's side of the draw, Elsa Jacquemot battled through a three-and-a-half-hour epic to shock the in-form Marta Kostyuk 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 7-6(7).

Flavio Cobolli was another big name to fall, as the 20th seed slipped to a straight-sets defeat against British qualifier Arthur Ferry.

Other notable winners overnight include Jasmine Paolini, Elina Svitolina, Maria Sakkari and Francisco Cerundolo.

Next up is a mouthwatering first evening session of the tournament, with world number one Aryna Sabalenka and legendary veteran Venus Williams both getting their campaigns underway in under two hours.

After that, Carlos Alcaraz will begin his quest to complete the career Grand Slam against home favourite Adam Walton, while former US Open champion Emma Raducanu will round out the women's side of the draw.
