Mia Blichfeldt on Thursday stunned the badminton world at the Denmark Open by beating the former Chinese Olympic champion Chen Yufei 21-9, 21-17 to avenge a defeat at the World Championships earlier in the year.

It was Blichfeldt's first win in seven years against Chen Yufei, and the Dane had only won one of their previous 11 matches, so the odds were definitely against Blichfeldt going into the match.

The most recent meeting between the two players ended in defeat for the Dane at the World Championships, and although Blichfeldt has come close to beating the Chinese star before, her last and only victory dated back to 2018.

"I played really with confidence and believed in my game today, and then I really enjoyed being on court today."

"I'm a little overwhelmed. I have wanted such a victory for a very long time, and to get it at home is a huge redemption. It's great that it also happened in two sets", says Mia Blichfeldt to TV 2 Sport after the match.

As a result of her win in Odense, Blichfeldt now faces unseeded opposition from Thailand or China in the quarter-finals. That match will be played on Friday.

Blichfeldt has previously struggled with both injuries and the mental part of her game. The charismatic Dane, however, now feels increasingly more balanced both mentally and physically following her move to France, where she lives with her boyfriend, Toma Junior Popov, while she is coached by his father, Toma Senior Popov.

"This change has really shown some good things on the badminton court, and I also think in my private life."
