Denmark will for the first time ever miss out on a medal in the men's singles at the European Badminton Championships after Magnus Johannesen crashed out in the quarter-final to Christo Popov.

Since the first European Badminton Championship were held in 1968, Denmark have won a medal every time in the men's singles, but on Friday that impressive record came to an abrupt end

Magnus Johannesen, who was the last remaining Dane in the men's singles, lost in the quarter-finals 14-21, 14-21 to French contender Christo Popov.

It has only happend twice since 1992 that a Danish player hasn't claimed the gold medal in the men's singles. At the last four European Championships, Viktor Axelsen and Anders Antonsen have shared the gold between them with two triumphs each.

However, neither of the two were presentat the tournament in Horsens due to injuries.

Axelsen already withdrew a few weeks before the start of the tournament due to back surgery, while Antonsen withdrew due to illness before he was set to be in action on Wednesday evening.

In the round of 16, Denmark's third best men's singles player, Rasmus Gemke, also withdrew after twisting his foot during the thrid set against the Finn Joakim Oldorff.
