Line Kjaersfeldt on Sunday night won the first Danish gold medal in the women's singles at the European Badminton Championships for 15 years when she defeated Kirsty Gilmour from Scotland 21-16, 21-17.

After a somewhat disappointing Danish performance at the European Championships which were staged in Horsens (Denmark), Line Kjaersfeldt at last gave the Danish fans something to cheer about, when she won the first Danish European Championship gold medal in women's singles since Tine Baun in 2012.

In Forum Horsens, Kjaersfeldt was the first to settle into her stride in the match against Gilmour and she never surrendered her momentum recording a deserved win through a scoreline of 21-16, 21-17.

Denmark thus rounded off the European championships with two gold medals - one in women's singles and one in mixed doubles, where Jesper Toft and Amalie Magelund upset the topseeded French pair Gicquel/Delrue on Saturday.

The men's singles turned out to be a huge disappointment for the hosts as Viktor Axelsen, Anders Antonsen and Rasmus Gemke all withdrew with injuries while Magnus Johannesen lost in the quarter-final.

And so Denmark ended up without a medal in the men's singles for the first time since 1968.
