Axelsen forced to undergo surgery and will miss big tournaments

Two-time Olympic gold winner Viktor Axelsen is set to undergo surgery for back problems which has haunted him during the beginning of the year.

After crashing out in the first round of the All England tournament in March, Axelsen said that we was forced into taking a longer break to tackle his physical problems and the Danish star has now chosen to take the consequences of his back problems by undergoing endoscopic surgery next week.

Axelsen confirms that he will miss the individual European Championships, which will take place in Horsens in ten day's time, just as he will also miss the World Championships for mixed teams (Sudirman Cup, ed.), which starts the last weekend in April.

"I am surrounded by extremely competent people, and I am looking forward to hopefully being able to train and compete without pain again", adds the double World Championships and Olympic gold medalist.

The highlights of the season for Axelsen will undoubtfully be the Super 1000 tournaments Indonesia Open and China Open, which start on 3 June and 22 July as well as Japan Open, which starts on 15 July.
