The Philadelphia Phillies and right-handed pitcher Joe Ross (31) agreed to a one-year, $4 million deal on Monday.

The team designated Jose Cuas for assignment to make way for Ross on the 40-man roster.

Ross is coming off a season for the Milwaukee Brewers in which he threw a 3.77 ERA in 74 innings while giving up 72 hits, 29 walks, and striking out 66 batters.

The seven-year veteran missed a few seasons over the course of his career. In 2020, he opted out of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic then missed the 2022 and 2023 seasons due to Tommy John surgery. Eventually, Ross saw himself on the IR again during the 2024 season with back problems.

He was originally in the Brewers' starting rotation last year, pitching a 4.50 ERA in 15 starts, then came back as a bullpen arm where he thrived. Ross threw an astounding 1.67 ERA in 15 relief appearances while striking out 27 batters in 27 innings.

Now, he gives the Phillies a nice back-end of the rotation option or a key bullpen piece if that's the road they go with.
