In an extremely tight game, the German national team beat Turkey to win their second Eurobasket title and their first since 1993.

Turkey started the game, spurred on by a mostly favourable crowd, by taking a 13-2 lead, enjoying full success from three-point range.

Germany coach Alex Mumbru called time-out and the Germans, led by Isaac Bonga, soon levelled the game 14-14. Germany then took the lead and entered the end of the first quarter with a two-point advantage (24-22).

In the second quarter, Germany began to really show their potential with counter-attacks led by Franz Wagner.

However, Turkey responded, with an outstanding Alperen Sengun taking charge of his team, assisted by Cedi Osman and Adem Bona, and turned the tide to give Ergin Ataman's side a six-point lead at half-time (46-40).

15 points from Sengun and 16 from Wagner were then scored before the break.

After the restart, Osman hit another three-pointer, but Germany responded with five straight points from Bonga. Equality was the dominant note.

Sengun and Osman, again successful from 6.75, again extended the lead for the Turks, but three-pointers from Tristan da Silva and Johannes Thiemann levelled the score again. With 10 minutes left, it was 67-66 to Turkey

German resilience

In the last quarter, a basket by Sengun, together with a good defensive play and the now classic triple by Osman, sealed a 5-0 lead for Turkey to make it 72-66.

The gap remained the same with five minutes to go (76-71). Germany missed the Franz Wagner of the start of the game, but Andy Obst and Bonga, who scored his fourth three-pointer from four shots, then turned the score around (77-76).

Kenan Sipahi's three-pointer then put Turkey ahead before Wagner was fouled in attack and Bonga, with a dunk, levelled the game.

Bonga and Schroder secure the victory

Two free throws by Shane Larkin put the Turks ahead again, but Theis with a three gave the Germans the lead.

Larkin then produced again to make it 83-82, but Dennis Schroder responded and Germany led by one before the last minute (84-83).

A good defensive action by Germany gave them possession, and despite a missed shot, Bonga grabbed the rebound and Schroder increased their lead.

Sengun then missed the last three-pointer, and Schroder with two more free throws ended the game.

Germany, with nine wins out of nine, are the new European champion.

The best of the final

Turkey's best players were Alperen Sengun with 28 points and Cedi Osman with 23. For Germany, Isaac Bonga scored 20 points, Franz Wagner 18, Denis Schroder 16 and Tristan da Silva 13. Bonga was named MVP in the final.

The team of the tournament was Denis Schroder (Germany), Luka Doncic (Slovenia), Franz Wagner (Germany), Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece) and Alperen Sengun (Turkey).

The tournament MVP award, presented by Rudy Fernandez, went to Schroder, who was also MVP at the last World Cup.
