The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed cornerback Zyon McCollum to a three-year, $48 million contract extension on Friday with $35.4 million in guaranteed money.

McCollum, a former fifth-round pick, has become a standout in the Bucs secondary, earning a new contract despite having two more years left on his original rookie deal that wasn't set to expire until after the 2026 season.

"Zyon has developed into an every-down starter for us and continues to elevate his game each year," said General Manager Jason Licth. "His athleticism, paired with his ability to limit opposing receivers, gives us a dependable and dynamic defender in the secondary. We are excited to keep an ascending player like Zyon in Tampa as we continue building around a young, talented core."

McCollum skyrocketed his game in 2024. In the year prior, he ranked 181st out of 229 corners. Then last season he jumped to 54th after ranking second in the NFL in pass breakups (13) among corners, 12th in solo tackles (66), and second in total coverage snaps (716).

After working as a backup for his first two seasons, McCollum started all of the Bucs' 17 games last year, including their playoff game. He posted a whopping 17 pass deflections, which tied for the third-most in the NFL.

Quarterbacks targeted him 108 times in 2024, but he only let up 62 completions for a new career-low 57.4% opposing completion percentage while also setting another career-low in opposing passer rating (86.9).

The 26-year-old also earned his first two interceptions last season. Now, he'll have plenty more opportunities to do so again in the years to come.

Tampa Bay's season kicks off on September 7th against the Atlanta Falcons
