Washington Commanders defensive tackle Johnny Newton is expected to miss significant time after undergoing surgery on a torn pectoral muscle, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Newton, 23, recorded 38 tackles and a career-high five sacks last season after playing in all 17 regular season games.

The former second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft started 11 games and played in 16 during his rookie campaign, in which he put up 44 tackles and two sacks.

It's another blow for the Commanders on the line, just on the other side of the ball. Earlier in camp, left tackle Laremy Tunsil suffered a torn triceps and will undergo surgery.

He will either miss the majority of the season, if not all of it.

Washington finished the 2025 season with a 5-12 record, a year removed from losing to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship. They'll take on the Eagles to kick off their season on September 13th.
