The Edmonton Oilers signed veteran defenceman Mattias Ekholm to a three-year, $12 million extension on Wednesday.

Ekholm's new contract that begins next season will hold an average annual value of $4 million. Year one will have a $2 million salary with a $2 million signing bonus, while years two and three will have $4 million in salary each.

He's currently in the final year of his four-year, $25 million deal.

Edmonton recently signed star forward Connor McDavid (two years, $25 million) and Jake Walman (seven years, $49 million).

The 35-year-old has spent the past three seasons with Edmonton, putting up 24 goals and 68 assists in 165 games. Ekholm's 58 assists the past two years are the second-most over a two-year span in his career, the first coming between the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons when he recorded 61.

His 33 points last season were tied for second-most with Darnell Nurse among Oilers defencemen.

Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2009 draft, Ekholm spent the first 12 seasons of his career as a member of the Nashville Predators

Over the course of his 15-year career, Ekholm has posted 86 goals and 274 assists in 884 games. In 2018, Ekholm was part of the Swedish National Team that went on to win the IIHF World Championship.

During last season, Ekholm was part of Team Sweden during the thrilling 4 Nations Face-Off and will likely be on his country's 2026 Winter Olympic team barring any injuries.

Edmonton's 2025-2026 season begins on October 8th against the Calgary Flames.
