The Netherlands' women's hockey team won a record-extending 13th European title after beating hosts Germany 2-1 in Monchengladbach on Sunday.

The Netherlands, who are also the reigning Olympic and world champions, won their fifth consecutive European title after Pien Dicke and Luna Fokke put the Netherlands up two in the first twenty minutes. Germany captain Lisa Nolte scored the only goal for the hosts in the 35th minute.

Germany were looking to get back in the game and came close when Yibbi Jansen, the Netherlands' penalty corner specialist, received her second green card and went into the sin bin. Two excellent saves from Anne Veenendaal kept Germany from finding the all-important equaliser.

Dominating Dutch

Sunday's final was Oranje's 88th consecutive game at a major tournament without a regular-time loss. The last time the Dutch women's team failed to win a game at a major tournament in regular time was in 2011.

On Saturday, the Netherlands lost to Germany in the men's final, meaning Germany had the chance to complete a first European double since 2013.

"It was a great fight from us from start to finish. I'm immensely proud of this young team. The close result is super bitter," said Selin Oruz, who will end her international career. Germany coach Janneke Schopman praised her team for a "very good game. But when we come so close, it hurts."
