Towards the end of the year, editors from our 14 countries have traditionally been asked to cast their votes in our annual Flashscore Awards, which celebrate the best of the past year in football. This time we had over 50 votes cast in each category.

The winner of Goal of the Year was Spain's Lamine Yamal with 19.6% of the votes.

Yamal's super strike was up against the likes of Argentinian Walter Bou's sensational scissor kick for Lanus against Tigres and Jaden Philogene's eminent 'Rabona' for Hull City against Rotherham United.

The young Spaniard's stunning goal came in the European Championship semi-final against France, where Luis de la Fuente's side fell behind after just nine minutes through Randal Kolo Muani. But 12 minutes later, the then 16-year-old stepped up with his masterpiece.

About the goal: A somewhat unsuccessful pass from Dani Olmo ended up at the feet of Yamal a few metres outside the penalty area after a counter-attack. He initially pulled to his right, but quickly changed direction to the left, throwing his opponent Adrien Rabiot off balance and curling the ball past the defence and into the left corner of the goal beyond the reach of Mike Maignan.

Yamal said of the goal after the game: "I just remember Dani Olmo had the ball, he gave it to me, I didn't think much about it because it was so quick, but I felt confident and tried to aim for the corner and luckily it went in."

The goal made Yamal the youngest-ever scorer at a European Championship and World Cup finals. The previous record holder was Brazilian Pele. To be precise, Yamal was 16 years and 362 days old when he scored the goal, whereas Pele was 17 years and 239 days old when he scored his first goal at the 1958 World Cup finals.

Yamal, who was deservedly presented with the Kopa Trophy as Under-21 Young Player of the Year at the end of October, had had 13 attempts on goal in the tournament up until the goal, but the 14th was worth waiting for.

And to underline that the goal was certainly no coincidence, the young Spaniard, who in 2024 became a regular part of FC Barcelona's starting line-up, had exactly one year earlier, on 9 July 2023, scored a very similar goal from just outside the box in Spain's U-17 European Championship semi-final - on that occasion also against France.

Four minutes after Yamal's equalising goal, Olmo, who had set up the first goal, found himself in the scoring role when he dribbled into the French box and hammered the ball past Maignan.

This made Olmo the first player to score in three consecutive games at a European Championship finals. It's also worth noting that Jesus Navas (38 years, 231 days) became the oldest player ever to play in a European Championship semi-final against France.
