22:50 BST - That's all tonight, thanks for joining us!

22:34 BST - Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has lost a Europa League semi-final leg for the first time since his Sevilla side were beaten 3-1 at Valencia in 2014. He had won eight straight semi-final matches in the competition before tonight (W6, D2).

He told TNT Sports: "We couldn't score. We conceded, but we controlled. We lost but did the match we planned. We had our chances to score and had momentum. We were successful in stopping their high press, the match was going like we planned. We defended well. The penalty was one action that happened.

"After their goal the most important thing was not to lose our mind and to keep our game plan. They were exited, pushing well. After the goal we kept same idea to draw the match, but more important was not to concede another goal.

"The match is not finished, it continues next week. We must come back."

22:24 BST - Speaking to TNT Sports, Crystal Palace goalscorer Jorgen Strand Larsen said: "You could see after we scored early that they are a good team. We had to stay in, not lose our heads. We are 3-1 up but there is still a game to play. Important for me and the team to get a third.

"We know the structure of the manager and the team. We had to accept they are a good team so we had to sit a bit deeper today but we did well on the counter attack, and if we were even better we could have scored more.

"We are not going to over-celebrate. We are really happy with this, hopefully we are going to smash it on Thursday and go through."

22:21 BST - Forest manager Vitor Pereira said to TNT Sports: "We changed the players but kept the spirit; the mentality to try to win games. The supporters? Fantastic, they help us a lot. Next time we face a big battle.

"For me it's an honour to manage this club, to try to help these payers, to see the smiles on the faces of these supporters."

22:20 BST - Nottingham Forest goalscorer Chris Wood told TNT Sports: "It's one leg of the tie. It's nice to have the advantage but going to Villa Park will be a tough game. They're good at their place. But we've done the job here at home and now hopefully we'll build into next week.

"It's cup competitions. They come down to small margins at times. Both teams played very well. But it's small moments that can potentially change games. Thankfully it went in our favour tonight and hopefully again next week."

22:02 BST - In this evening's two other semi-finals, Braga scored in the second minute of added time to beat Freiburg 2-1, while Rayo Vallecano take a narrow lead to France after overcoming Strasbourg 1-0.

21:51 BST - We're deep into time added on. Can Aston Villa find a late equaliser or will Nottingham Forest put this tie behind reach?

21:42 BST - GOAL! Palace have scored a third against Shakhtar! Daichi Kamada finds Jorgen Strand Larson who charges through on goal and prods the ball past goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk to give them a huge advantage for the return leg in London next week.

21:27 BST - GOAL! Forest are ahead! Chris Wood thumps the ball into the top corner leaving Emiliano Martínez no chance.

21:25 BST - PENALTY! The ball appears to be going out of play as Omari Hutchinson's cutback strikes Lucas Digne's outstretched arm.

There's a lengthy VAR review before referee João Pedro Silva Pinheiro is advised to take a look at the pitchside monitor. We all know what's coming, and the penalty is duly awarded. Forest have the chance to take the lead...

21:17 BST - GOAL! Crystal Palace re-take the lead over Shakhtar! Daichi Kamada lashes them ahead from a corner.

21:16 BST - CHANCE! Jean-Philippe Mateta hits the post for Palace and the ball bobbles along the six yard area before it's cleared. So close for Palace.

21:12 BST - What a save! Shakhtar goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk charges out to keep the scores level.

21:10 BST - Aston Villa's Amadou Onana - finally back in the starting XI after returning from a knee injury - agonisingly limps off with another injury. Lamare Bogarde comes on to replace him.

21:08 BST - Omari Hutchinson is bundled over by Lucas Digne and lands awkwardly. He holds his shoulder but gingerly carries on.

20:06 BST - GOAL! Shakhtar have equalised against Palace! Oleh Ocheretko pokes home from a Kaua Elias knock-down to pull them level.

21:01 BST - We're back underway at the City Ground and in Krakow.

20:50 BST - In the two other semi-finals, Braga missed a penalty and go into the break 1-1 against Freiburg, while Rayo Vallecano and Strasbourg are level at 0-0.

20:47 BST - HALF-TIME! And the whistle blows in Krakow. Palace lead at the interval after their blistering start.

20:45 BST - Just a few minutes left of the first half of the semi-finals.

20:35 BST - Fantastic save by Emiliano Martínez to deny Igor Jesus! The ball is squared to the Forest forward who prods a shot at goal from six yards, but Martínez sticks out a strong left arm to deny him on the line before grasping the ball with his other arm. Phenominal goalkeeping.

20:30 BST - It's end to end at the City Ground as Ollie Watkins is hacked down by Elliot Anderson. Should that be a red card? VAR takes a look and referee João Pedro Silva Pinheiro waves play on.

20:15 BST - Aston Villa have started brightly against Forest and have enjoyed almost 60 per cent possession, but it's still goalless.

20:02 BST - GOAL! What a start for Crystal Palace! Ismaila Sarr breaks free into the box and shoots low to give the Eagles the lead against Shakhtar after just 21 seconds.

That's Sarr's eighth goal in the Conference League and he tops the tournament goalscoring chart this season.

20:00 BST - We're underway!

19:58 BST - The players are walking out onto the pitch. We're moments away from kick-off.

19:38 BST - Can Nottingham Forest put one foot in the Europa League final tonight? This fan certainly thinks so.

The odds are somewhat against them, however: Forest are 16th in the Premier League, five points clear of the relegation zone. Next season they could be the first team to compete in the both the Championship and Champions League.

18:15 BST - Most of the attention tonight will be at the City Ground where Nottingham Forest host Aston Villa in the first major European semi-final between two English sides since the 2008/09 Champions League clash between Arsenal and Man Utd (which Utd won 4-1 on aggregate).

But how do Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa compare at this stage previously?

Nottingham Forest are into their fourth major European semi-final, previously playing at this stage in the 1978/79 and 1979/80 European Cup – reaching and winning the final in both – and 1983/84 UEFA Cup where they lost 3-2 on aggregate to Anderlech.

For a second time in the last three seasons, Aston Villa are into a major European semi-final, losing 6-2 on aggregate to Olympiakos in the 2023/24 Conference League. Before this, their only other last four appearance was in the 1981/82 European Cup when they knocked out Anderlecht.

17:30 BST - Hello and welcome back to the Football Tracker on a busy night in the Europa League and Conference League as their semi-finals get underway.

As well as an all-English clash at the City Ground, Crystal Palace travel to Krakow to face Shakhtar Donetsk. We'll bring you team news as soon as we have it, and you can click on the links below to receive push notifications from each match.

23:30 BST - That's it from us this evening, we'll leave you with tonight's highlights so you can decide for yourself whether or not it was a penalty. See you soon!

23:18 BST - Equally unsurprising is the fact that Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak agreed with the referee's decision to overturn the penalty.

"It was an intense game from both sides," he told TNT Sports. "Both sides were looking for a win but I think we had a good game but at 1-1, there's a lot to decide in London next week.

"There's always relief when a penalty is overturned, I hope I would have stopped it anyway. It was the referee's decision to change it and we agree with him."

23:12 BST - Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was unsurprisingly left unimpressed by the decision to overturn his side's late penalty.

"Speaking to the boys and understanding the penalty incident for the second goal getting overturned. It was against the rules and I don't understand it. Very upset," he told TNT Sports.

"There is clear contact; he makes the decision and you can't overturn it when you have to watch it 13 times."

Asked whether the referee may felt the pressure of the home team and their support, Arteta said: "I don't know. That's an answer for him. It's the wrong decisions and it changes the course of the tie."

22:58 BST - Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokores was happy with his side's performance, but warned there is still a huge second leg to come.

"I think in the first half we controlled the game quite well," he told TNT Sports.

"We had a few good opportunities and managed to score. In the second half they started much better and managed to get a goal and then towards the end we had a few okay chances.

"Overall it was a tough game, it's a tough place to come but it's only half time."

22:27 BST - This man was impressive for the hosts this evening, and could easily have had more goals to his name.

22:19 BST - It wasn't the goal-fest we saw last night, but there wasn't any drama lacking this evening. That second leg promises to be a big one next week!

21:58 BST - FULL-TIME: There's the referee's whistle in Madrid. Well the talking point will be that penalty that wasn't given, but Arsenal won't be too disappointed with a draw away from home in the first leg. They'll back themselves with the all the noise on their side next week. Click here for our full report from Madrid.

21:51 BST - We will have seven minutes of added time.

21:50 BST - Rice has a shot from distance but it isn't on target. For what it's worth, Arsenal don't seem happy to leave here with a draw, they look like they want more.

21:42 BST - NO PENALTY! That is a bit surprising. The referee has had a long conversation with VAR and then heads for the monitor. It still looks like a foul, but he's overturned it. The home side love it, the Arsenal fans in attendance and beyond - less so.

21:39 BST - PENALTY! Arsenal have a second penalty as Eze goes down in the box! Hancko is once again the man to commit the foul. VAR are looking at it but there's likely not going to be enough to overturn it.

21:34 BST - CHANCE! Another save from Raya as Lookman becomes the latest to test the Arsenal goalkeeper from close range. Arsenal seemed to be somewhat in command at half-time but they're clinging on a little at the moment.

21:29 BST - There's a triple change for Arsenal as Martinelli, Gyokeres and Madueke trot off to be replaced by Trossard, Jesus and Saka.

21:24 BST - CLOSE! Griezmann has just rattled the crossbar with a shot from close range after taking a pass from Lookman. Arsenal are having to absorb a lot of pressure at the moment.

21:17 BST - GOAL! Alvarez, who has looked the most likely to score his side's first all night, has fired it left to leave a rooted Raya watching the ball as it whistles into the goal. We are all level in Madrid.

21:16 BST - PENALTY! It's been given!

21:15 BST - VAR - The Arsenal fans won't like this. The referee is looking at a potential penalty for Atletico. White's hand is dangling as he tries to block a shot. It doesn't look good.

21:13 BST - DOUBLE SAVE! Lookman goes down the left on the break and he shoots at Raya who blocks solidly, and the ball falls for Griezmann who has his attempt blocked by Gabriel.

21:10 BST - CLOSE! Alvarez steps over a free-kick just outside the box and it's so close to going in that it ruffles the side netting which convinced a few home fans they had their equaliser. Not to be, though, as Arsenal still lead.

21:06 BST - We are back underway in Madrid!

21:03 BST - Arsenal fans will be happy to hear the following stat about their team: Arsenal have a record of W10, D0, L0 when scoring the opening goal in this season's Champions League.

20:50 BST - HALF-TIME: We've reached the break in Madrid where Arsenal hold a 1-0 lead thanks to a Gyokeres penalty right at the end of the first half. Can they push on from here?

20:46 BST - GOAL! Gyokeres steps up and converts from the spot. An excellent penalty from the Arsenal man, who smashes the ball to give the goalkeeper no chance to save it despite diving the right way.

20:44 BST - PENALTY! Arsenal have a chance to take the lead here. Gyokeres gets the ball inside the area and gets clumsily clattered from behind by Hancko. VAR take a look but there's absolutely no reason to overturn that one.

20:43 BST - Trouble for Arsenal as Atletico go on the break, but it's Rice who races back to end the threat right on the edge of the Arsenal box.

20:32 BST - Lookman is the latest to take a shot in the direction of an outstretched Raya, but the ball flies past the wrong side of the post.

20:24 BST - Gyokeres is getting a bit of attention from the medics after taking an accidental elbow to the face from his own teammate.

20:16 BST - CHANCES! Raya is called into action for the first time tonight as Alvarez strikes from just outside the box. It's a good, solid save that will give the Arsenal goalkeeper confidence. Immediately thereafter Arsenal break and Odegaard looks to shoot but he's blocked at the last second by the scrambling home defence.

20:01 BST - And we are underway in the first leg of his huge Champions League semi-final!

19:50 BST - Kick-off is just around the corner and the atmosphere is building in Madrid.

19:30 BST - 30 minutes to kick-off!

19:09 BST - Seeing Saka and Eze on the bench this evening has raised a few eyebrows, but they will no doubt still play a part this evening. Time will tell if it was the correct call by Arteta.

Following on from last night's thriller between PSG and Bayern Munich, Mikel Arteta's Arsenal visit Atletico Madrid hoping to end a run of cagey performances that have seen them fall away in the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup in recent weeks.

22:49 BST - That'll do it for tonight. Thank you for joining us!

22:47 BST - After Bayern's 5-4 first-leg defeat in Paris, England captain Harry Kane said: "You saw two high-level teams in attacking play and transition. Overall, we look at their goals; the penalty was harsh, but we could have killed the game earlier on.

"We fought, and we clawed, and we're back in the tie. I thought there was amazing defending, even though there were nine goals. Sometimes the forwards will come out on top, but the back line was outstanding today," he told Amazon Prime.

"You will always feel there are areas to improve on. We go to the Allianz with nothing to lose; we're at our best when we're intense and physical.

"It'll be who takes their moments next week, with the crowd behind us, we hope that can push us over the line."

21:57 BST - FULL-TIME: PSG 5-4 Bayern. Exhilarating stuff. Words simply can't do that match justice, but we'll try. Read our match report here.
