There is one hell of a weekend of football ahead of us with title deciders, cup finals and playoffs aplenty. This is your one-stop shop for all the results and biggest stories.

00:55 CET - Some playoffs aside, that's that for domestic football in Europe's major leagues this season! Fear not though, because we still have the small matter of the Conference League and Champions League finals to come next week!

We'll of course be covering both, so be sure to join us then!

23:15 CET - LaLiga champions Barcelona have ended their season on a high, comfortably seeing out a 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao, who qualify for the Champions League nonetheless.

This is how Spain's top division has finished:

22:45 CET - That's that for the 2024/25 Serie A season, and what a final day it was! Juventus have narrowly beaten Roma to Champions League football, Fiorentina have taken the Conference League spot from Lazio and Empoli have gone down along with Venezia.

Here's the final table:

22:34 CET - Fiorentina goal! Moise Kean has put them back ahead and back into the top six! Lazio now need to equalise if they want to play European football next season.

22:32 - We're into the final 10 minutes of the season and things couldn't be tighter, with teams level or separated by a single goal in all but one of the matches! One goal could change everything!

22:24 CET - Juventus retake the lead! Manuel Locatelli has taken them back into the top four with a goal from the spot.

22:18 CET - At the bottom of the table, Venezia and Empoli are going down as it stands despite drawing their respective matches. If Lazio were to equalise against Lecce and the rest of the scores stayed the same, Lecce and Empoli would enter a relegation playoff.

22:15 CET - Udinese have pegged back Fiorentina, putting Lazio back into the Conference League spot, while Roma are leading Torino 2-0 and looking comfortable.

22:06 CET - Venezia equalise! Ridgeciano Haps has scored a goal that has dropped Juventus out of the Champions League places, with Roma taking their spot as it stands.

Fiorentina meanwhile have come from behind to lead Udinese and take sixth from Lazio, who are currently set to miss out on European football altogether.

21:48 CET - Juve are 45 minutes away from securing Champions League football, but things have been far from comfortable for them in Venice.

21:35 CET - In a massive few minutes on the stroke of half-time, Lecce have taken the lead against Lazio through Lassana Coulibaly but have then gone down to 10 men with Santiago Pierotti getting a second yellow.

As a result of that, this is how the Serie A table looks at the break:

21:26 CET - Barcelona are in cruise control, leading 2-0 after just 25 minutes courtesy of two goals from Robert Lewandowski.

21:20 CET - 30 minutes into the Serie A games, Roma and Juventus are now both leading, while Lazio are being held.

21:10 CET - Sporting do the double! After equalising in the 100th minute via Viktor Gyokeres, the league champions scored twice in extra-time to beat rivals Benfica 3-1 in the Taca de Portugal final!

20:58 CET - Juve have their goal disallowed! Venezia are one Lazio goal away from safety as it stands.

20:54 CET - What a start in Venice! Venezia took the lead after just two minutes and Juventus have levelled things up after five!

20:50 CET - The final day of the 2024/25 Serie A season is underway! Who can rise to the occasion?

20:20 CET - Over in Spain, it will be an evening of celebration for Barcelona. They face Athletic Bilbao in the Basque Country, knowing the title is won and they have a long break ahead of them.

For the San Mames faithful, they are back in the Champions League next season after securing fourth spot in midweek, so it will be a party atmosphere for both sides in what is always an entertaining encounter.

20:04 CET - Want some more final-day drama? Well, we have you covered as Serie A comes to a close tonight.

Six games kick off at 20:45 CET, with the battle for the final Champions League spot and the scrap for safety still both in the balance.

Let's start with a look at the top of the table.

Juventus currently occupy fourth spot and are in pole position to qualify if they can beat Venezia away from home. That could be a tough task given that their opponents are fighting for their own survival and must win if they are to have any chance of staying in Serie A.

The closest challenger to Juve is Claudio Ranieri's Roma. They are just one point behind and in good form. They take on Torino - Juventus' city rival - in Turin, with the hosts having nothing to play for.

The race for Champions League in Serie AFlashscore

Lazio could also usurp both of them as they take on Lecce in the capital. Like the Juventus and Venezia game, Lecce are also fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table, knowing a win should see them safe.

Their biggest rivals at this stage are Empoli. They occupy 18th spot with 31 points before play, and must at least match Lecce's result to force, at the very worst, a playoff with Lecce to see who goes down. If they do beat Verona, Empoli can drag them into the fight as well.

However, they both could still catch Parma. The former UEFA Cup winners are on 33 points, two points above the relegation zone. They face Atalanta, who will finish third no matter what happens tonight.

19:22 CET - There's a party going down at Anfield and the city is invited. Liverpool have lifted the Premier League trophy, in front of their adoring fans.

Is this the start of an era of dominance for the Reds?

19:10 CET - Home teams are parading around the pitch with the traditional lap of honour across England, but there is one that stands out and that is at Anfield, where Liverpool will lift the Premier League trophy very soon.

19:06 CET - The Premier League is officially over for another year. Here is how it all looks after 38 matchdays.

The final Premier League table
The final Premier League tableFlashscore

19:01 CET - Newcastle and Chelsea have qualified for the Champions League.

Chelsea have battled all season for a Champions League spot, and despite a season of ups and downs, they have beaten Nottingham Forest 1-0 on the final day to book their spot in the competition. Meanwhile, Newcastle's late-season form has seen them also in despite losing 1-0 to Everton at St James' Park.

Aston Villa's 2-0 loss to Manchester United meant they couldn't capitalise on Newcastle's defeat as they finish sixth in the table, where they started the day. The big losers of the day are Forest. After spending much of the campaign in the top four, they have ended the season seventh and will play in the Conference League next year.

Manchester City, third at the start of the day, did their job, beating Fulham 2-0 and recovering back to third after a disastrous season for their standards.

18:57 CET - The results are coming in thick and fast now. Brighton's day in the capital has ended brilliantly with a 4-1 victory over Tottenham. It was a better day for the other north London side, as Arsenal beat Southampton 2-1.

18:54 CET - All over at Molineux, where Wolves and Brentford have shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw. More consequential results to come...

One of those is at Anfield, where that late goal from Mohamed Salah sees Liverpool rescue a point against Crystal Palace, and Bournemouth have seen off relegated Leicester City 2-0.

18:52 CET - Brighton are finishing the season in style! A late goal from Diego Gomez - his first for the club in the Premier League - sees them 4-1 up against Tottenham.

18:48 CET - Penalty for Manchester United! Aston Villa have unravelled at Old Trafford this afternoon, and it gets worse with Christian Eriksen making it 2-0 with three minutes to play. Villa's dreams of Champions League football seem dead and buried.

18:45 CET - Less than 10 minutes to go across the Premier League. As it stands, Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle will join Liverpool and Arsenal in next season's Champions League. Aston Villa will finish sixth and play Europa League football, whilst Nottingham Forest will take part in the Conference League.

Away from the important parts of the table, Martin Odegaard has put Arsenal back in front against Southampton, Bournemouth lead Leicester 2-0, Brighton have added another against Spurs, and West Ham are 3-1 up at Ipswich.

18:43 CET - With six minutes to go at Anfield, Liverpool are level, and who else but Mohamed Salah? His sumptuous scissor kick in front of the Kop pegs back Crystal Palace.

18:39 CET - And it gets worse for Aston Villa. Just moments after having a goal ruled out, Manchester United go up the other end and open the scoring. Amad Diallo steals in round the back to head home a lovely Bruno Fernandes cross. It brings some rare cheer to Old Trafford as Unai Emery cuts a disconsolate figure on the touchline.

As it stands, Newcastle are back in the Champions League spots at the expense of Villa.

18:36 CET - Aston Villa have the ball in the back of the net, but it's ruled out, somewhat controversially. Bayindir can't keep control of the ball, and Morgan Rogers manages to get it free from his clutches to fire in from close range. But the referee believes it's a foul, and VAR agrees, much to the consternation of Unai Emery.

18:33 CET - Wolves have hit back against Brentford through Marshall Munetsi, whilst Bournemouth now lead Leicester City and Manchester City are two to the good at Fulham.

Erling Haaland slots home a spot-kick - eight days on from handing the duties to Omar Marmoush, only for him have it saved - to give his side a nice buffer.

City look certain to be heading back to the Champions League next season.

18:27 CET - St James' Park silenced! A header from Charly Alcaraz has put Everton ahead against Newcastle in the 65th minute, meaning, as it stands, the Magpies would finish sixth and Aston Villa - still drawing 0-0 at Old Trafford despite being a man down - will qualify for the Champions League.

It's taken 65 minutes, but we have some jeopardy on the final day.

Meanwhile, at Anfield, Ryan Gravenberch has been sent for an early bath after denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity. The second incident of the day in the Premier League, both concrete reds.

18:26 CET - All over in LaLiga, as Villarreal see off Sevilla 4-2 to end their season on a high.

18:23 CET - What a day it is turning out to be for Jack Hinshelwood! He has his second of the game against Tottenham to see Brighton lead 2-1 in London with 25 minutes left to play.

18:13 CET - A massive goal for Chelsea! They lead Nottingham Forest 1-0 after Levi Colwill taps in at the back post to put his side on the cusp of Champions League football. As it stands, they move up to fourth ahead of Newcastle.

Goals going in everywhere now! Southampton have netted through Ross Stewart against Arsenal to make it 1-1, whilst West Ham are back in front at Ipswich thanks to talisman Jarrod Bowen.

Keep up with the live standings here.

18:10 CET - Out of nowhere, Brighton are level at Tottenham. A corner from the left finds Jack Hinshelwood at the front post, and he lifts his effort over Vicario to make it 1-1. Meanwhile, at Portman Road, Ipswich have equalised against West Ham, Nathan Broadhead getting on the scoresheet.

18:04 CET - Back underway in the Premier League, and Trent Alexander-Arnold is on for Liverpool in place of Conor Bradley for his final appearance in red at Anfield. Not as many boos today for their departing right-back.

17:58 CET - A quick stop in Spain before we get to the Premier League action, and it's all going Villarreal's way against Sevilla. They are now 4-1 up with 10 minutes to play as Pape Gueye gets his second of the game.

17:51 CET - Half-time across the Premier League, and here's how we stand.

In the race for the Champions League, Manchester City are leading Fulham 1-0 thanks to a lovely finish from Ilkay Gundogan to cement third spot in the league.

The other games involving teams who can make it are all goalless, but Aston Villa are hampered by that late first-half sending off for Emi Martinez.

Nottingham Forest and Chelsea are locked at 0-0, Chris Wood and Pedro Neto both went close with volleys, only to fire their efforts over.

West Ham lead Ipswich and Arsenal are ahead against Southampton. Tottenham continue their good week after a Dominic Solanke penalty put them ahead against Brighton.

At Anfield, Crystal Palace have the most surprising scoreline at the break, with a one-goal advantage over Liverpool thanks to Ismaila Sarr. Finally, Brentford are a goal to the good at Wolves with Bryan Mbeumo getting on the scoresheet.

17:46 CET - A huge moment at Old Trafford in Aston Villa's quest for Champions League football. Goalkeeper Emi Martinez has been given a straight red for charging into Rasmus Hojlund about 30 metres from his line. It's a cynical foul and he has his marching orders. The visitors are down to 10 men!

17:43 CET - Down to the south coast, where Kieran Tierney, in what could be his final game for Arsenal, has given his side a 1-0 lead over Southampton with a composed near-post finish after getting in front of his marker. He looks delighted to have scored.

And, at Ipswich Town, James Ward-Prowse applies a simple finish to put West Ham in front in what is one of the bigger dead rubbers of the day.

17:37 CET - Newcastle are pressing hard for an opener against Everton, and with a series of corners, they go close on each occasion. Dan Burn goes closest, though, hitting the post with a stabbed effort in the box. A win for Newcastle will guarantee them Champions League football for next season.

17:30 CET - With just Manchester City winning from the teams in the top seven, not much has changed from the table before the games kicked off. At Old Trafford, Manchester United are on top of Aston Villa with a couple of clear-cut chances going just wide. If only they had had this attacking intensity on Wednesday...

Over at the City Ground, it's an understandably cagey affair given the circumstances for Nottingham Forest and Chelsea. Pedro Neto gets onto the end of a Cole Palmer, but he can only direct his volley over the bar.

17:20 CET - Brentford lead at Wolves. A mishap at the back leads to a relatively easy tap-in for Bryan Mbeumo, who looks set to end his season on fire.

Meanwhile, our first big goal in the race for the Champions League! Manchester City are 1-0 up against Fulham thanks to an acrobatic overhead kick from Ilkay Gundogan. As it stands, the goal will wrap up third place for the Citizens.

17:16 CET - Penalty to Tottenham! Dominic Solanke steps up for Spurs and hits his shot off the underside of the bar and into the net. A perfect penalty and a perfect start for the Europa League champions. They lead Brighton 1-0 after 17 minutes.

17:10 CET - Crystal Palace are ahead at champions Liverpool. Some sloppy defending from the Reds allows Ismaila Sarr in one-on-one against Allison, and the winger makes no mistake to slot home and give the Eagles the lead.

17:08 CET - No goals across the 10 Premier League games in the early going, but we are at the break in LaLiga, where Villarreal look to be ending their season on a high as they lead Sevilla 3-1.

17:00 CET - Here we go then, for the final time this season, the Premier League is underway...

16:56 CET - Back to Spain, where Villarreal have restored their two-goal advantage over Sevilla thanks to a strike from Alex Baena.

16:43 CET - We said earlier that it will be a fun dynamic at a jubilant Anfield, and the two managers of Liverpool and Crystal Palace are in a good mood, meeting before the game to exchange gifts.

Meanwhile, Sevilla are back in the game against Villarreal, Djibril Sow reducing the deficit to one with 15 minutes left in the first half.

16:28 CET - A fine start for Villarreal sees them two up against Sevilla inside the first 10 minutes. Pape Gueye has their second of the day at La Ceramica.

16:22 CET - Back to LaLiga, where Champions League-destined Villarreal have taken an early lead over Sevilla. Yeremy Pino has netted in the fourth minute to give some early cheer to the home fans.

16:18 CET - Some breaking news before we get to the football - Southampton have announced former Reims and Lens manager Will Still as their new coach for next season. Still joins on a three-year deal and will be at their game today against Arsenal.

16:03 CET - We are just under an hour away from the final Premier League matchday of the season, so let's bring you up to speed with what could happen today.

Liverpool finish their title celebrations at Anfield, where they take on FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in what could be the best party atmosphere of the day. The Reds will lift the Premier League title in front of their home crowd for the first time of the era, in what will be a defining moment for the Liverpool faithful.

Arsenal will finish second after today's games - the only way that can change is if they are thrashed by bottom side Southampton, which feels unlikely.

Speaking of relegation, that has been sewn up for some time as the Saints will be joined in the Championship by Leicester City and Ipswich Town, who face Bournemouth and West Ham respectively. Both of those sides have nothing to play for.

But, where the action lies is for European qualification. Manchester City know a win will be enough to see them qualify for the Champions League and finish third. A loss to Fulham, though, could see them drop as low as sixth. Chasing them are Newcastle in fourth, Chelsea in fifth, and Aston Villa in sixth. Those trio are all on 66 points. Nottingham Forest also have a chance of making the top five - their game against Chelsea is the biggest of the day, in what is effectively a play-in game for the Champions League.

15:55 CET - A wonderful day for Alexander Sorloth in Atletico Madrid colours, as he completes his hat-trick in stoppage time to seal a 4-0 win over Girona.

15:07 CET - Back underway at Montilivi, where neither Girona and Atletico Madrid make a change at half-time.

Meanwhile, Villarreal and Sevilla are getting ready for their final game of the season, with the hosts already qualified for the Champions League.

12:53 CET - Before we dive into the Premier League permutations a little later, we have one early game in LaLiga, featuring Girona and Atletico Madrid.

The Catalan side were safe from relegation going into the final weekend, but it has been a disappointing campaign for them in a year that started with Champions League football.

For Atleti, a title run ended back in March and third place is already sewn up for Diego Simeone's men before they head to the Club World Cup in June.

Here are the lineups for the game kicking off at 14:00 CET.

11:55 CET - Welcome back to Flashscore's Football Tracker as we close the book on Europe's top domestic leagues.

Today, the Premier League, Serie A and LaLiga all come to an end with still plenty to play for.

In the Premier League, we may not have the excitement of a title battle or one for relegation, but the European spots have plenty to keep you excited.

From Manchester City in third to Nottingham Forest in seventh, only three points separate the five sides. They all will have some European football to look forward to next year, but what competition remains a mystery.

One of the teams in the thick of it is Aston Villa. They face a trip to Manchester United from 17:00 CET, and before then, we have delved into their season as well as what could be in store for Villa over the summer.

Saturday, May 25th

00:21 CET - That's that for Saturday's action, but there's even more to come tomorrow with the Premier League, Serie A and LaLiga seasons all coming to an end.

23:00 CET- Finally tonight, Rayo Vallecano have secured a Conference League spot after holding on to a 0-0 draw against a Mallorca side who just miss out on Europe.

Meanwhile, Celta Vigo have qualified for the Europa League after long-serving striker Iago Aspas scored a winner late on against Getafe.

Elsewhere from the final round of LaLiga:

Alaves 1-1 Osasuna

22:53 CET - PSG ARE THE COUPE DE FRANCE CHAMPIONS!

In truth, the job was done in the first half, and all PSG had to do in the second period was control the game and see out the final. Unfortunately for Reims, Luis Enrique's side happen to be one of the best in Europe at doing just that, so it was a very controlled and comfortable second half.

Next up for PSG is to complete the treble at Munich next Saturday night in the Champions League final.

22:42 CET - AC Milan have ended an underwhelming campaign on a high with a 2-0 win at home against Monza.

22:00 CET - VfB Stuttgart are champions of the DFB Pokal after winning the final 4-2 against third division side Arminia Bielefeld

The underdogs, Arminia, put up a good fight and went out swinging after coming back from 4-0 down to finish 4-2 and give their fans two goals to celebrate on the biggest day in the club's history.

Stuttgart, though, will celebrate long into the night after winning the DFB Pokal for the fourth time in their history.

21:52 CET - PSG are cruising to the Coupe de France title after an extremely impressive first half against Reims

The Ligue 1 champions have shown exactly why they are on for a historic treble after scoring three well-worked and expertly executed goals.

Like most teams in Europe, Reims have just been outclassed by a side on a different level to them and utterly dominant.

Follow the second half of the final here.

20:57 CET - Over to Serie A, and AC Milan will hope to end their underwhelming season (which will end with no European football) on a high.

They are underway at home to Monza with 10 minutes gone.

20:50 CET - It is half-time in the DFB Pokal final, and it has turned into a one-sided affair, sadly for third division side Arminia Bielefeld.

Despite the minnows dominating possession in the biggest game of the club's history, Stuttgart have been ruthless on the counter, scoring from each of their three shots on target.

In the final third at least, it has been clear which side are in the Bundesliga and that is what puts Stuttgart in an incredible position to win their first DFB Pokal since the 1996/97 season.

20:40 CET - Next up tonight is another big final in Europe as PSG take on Reims in the Coupe de France final.

It is a huge occasion for Reims, who are in the final for the first time since they lost to Saint-Etienne in the 1977 final.

It is significant for a different reason for PSG, though, as Luis Enrique's side look to complete a historic treble for the club.

To do so, the Parisians will need to win tonight and then beat Inter Milan in the Champions League final a week today.

18:10 CET - SUNDERLAND ARE PROMOTED TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE!

That goal deep into stoppage time by youngster Tom Watson in his parting gift to the club would prove to be a winning one, sending the Sunderland fans into ecstasy.

Heartbreak for Sheffield United, however, who for much of that final were in control and looked destined for promotion.

18:02 CET - Incredible ending to this playoff final as Sunderland take the lead in the 95th minute and on the brink of promotion!

After striker Kieffer Moore gave the ball away around the halfway line, Sunderland's departing 19-year-old Tom Watson side-footed an effort from the edge of the box, which curled delightfully into the bottom corner.

Extraordinary drama.

17:52 CET - As Real close in on victory in Ancelotti's goodbye game, there are two sides with a lot still to play for in LaLiga up next.

Espanyol just need a point at home to Las Palmas from 18:30 CET, but defeat and Leganes will stay up in their place as long as they win at home to Valladolid.

17:35 CET - 20 minutes left at Wembley and despite a good second half response from Sunderland, Sheffield United remain 1-0 up and in control.

It hasn't been a thriller, but how often do games of this magnitude deliver classics?

16:57 CET - After eight added minutes, it is half-time in the Championship playoff final as Sheffield United lead Sunderland 1-0. It has been United asking all the questions so far, and they will feel unfortunate not to be two goals up.

Sunderland need to come out a different side in the second half if they want to stand a chance of reaching the promised land of the Premier League. Chris Wilder will be demanding more of the same from his side.

16:40 CET - It was very nearly a second for Sheffield United and game over! A Harrison Burrows strike on the rebound found the bottom corner, but interference on the keeper was detected by VAR, who correctly ruled the goal out.

16:30 CET - You can't say it hadn't been coming! After a dominant start to the final, Sheffield United score the opening goal.

16:07 CET - Play is underway at Wembley, and we have had a big moment already! Sunderland keeper Anthony Patterson made cat-like reflexes for the Black Cats to deny the towering Kieffer Moore in the second minute.

We have another huge day ahead of us, with three season-defining finals on the agenda.

In England, Sunderland and Sheffield United will battle it out for a place in the Premier League in the Championship playoff final, a match that can change a club's fortunes more than any other.

Over in Germany, third-tier side Arminia Bielefeld will look to pull off one of the shocks of the season by winning the DFB Pokal - Stuttgart stand in their way.

Reims will be looking to complete a fairytale story of their own when they face PSG in the Coupe de France final, with Luis Enrique's side aiming to move a step closer to a historic quadruple.

First up is the action at Wembley as well as Carlo Ancelotti's final match in charge of Real Madrid, against Real Sociedad, and both will kick off in around two hours.

Friday, May 24th

22:59 CET - In the evening's only LaLiga match, Real Betis and Valencia have drawn 1-1.

22:48 CET - They’ve done it! Napoli have beaten Cagliari 2-0 to claim the Scudetto! Goals from this season’s heroes, Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku, were enough to get the job done. It’s just Napoli’s fourth ever Serie A title.

At the same time, Inter have beaten Como 2-0, however, they finish the Serie A season one point short of Antonio Conte’s men. For them, a Champions League final awaits, at least.

Incredibly, Conte is the first coach ever to win the Scudetto with three different teams.

22:30 CET - Just about 10 minutes of regular time to play, and as it stands, Napoli are closing in on their fourth Italian title; they lead Cagliari 2-0!

22:03 CET - Romelu Lukaku has put Napoli into a 2-0 lead and with that, put one hand on the Serie A title! Almost immediately as that happened, Joaquin Correa has put Inter into a 2-0 goal lead over 10-man Como as well, but that won't matter if Napoli hang on.

21:59 CET - The second halves are underway! 45 minutes for Napoli to hang on to become Italian champions for just the fourth time.

21:42 CET - At half-time, both Napoli and Inter are leading 1-0 in their respective matches, meaning, as it stands, Napoli will be crowned champions.

21:38 CET - Inter have been handed a huge advantage, Como keeper Pepe Reina has been sent off. And not only is he off, but it's his last game before retirement! Shocking tackle from the great man.

21:32 CET - Scott McTominay has put Napoli into the lead (1-0) against Cagliari, and that fires them back into top spot! What a goal, too, the big Scot rose and scissor-kicked it in. Could that be the defining goal? We'll see!

21:10 CET - Inter have taken the lead over Como through Stefan de Vrij! 1-0. As it stands, Inter will be the champions... plenty of time to go, though.

21:05 CET - Napoli are all over Cagliari in the early stages of their match, they've had six shots already!

20:49 CET - The matches are underway in Naples and Como, follow both via the links below. Remember, Napoli will clinch the title with a win over Cagliari!

20:05 CET - We are only 40 minutes away from kick-offs, and the team news has come in for this evening. Below, you can see how the sides will line up for the title deciders.

As expected, Inter are resting a few key players ahead of the Champions League final. Is that them admitting defeat? Not quite, but they do require a mini miracle today: Napoli not beating Cagliari.

Here's the state of play: Napoli lead Inter by one point in the standings, meaning if they beat Cagliari in Naples, the Scudetto is theirs. If they don't win but match or better Inter's result, it's also theirs.

Inter, meanwhile, are away at Como. For them to claim the title, they must better Napoli's result this evening.

However, there is one important caveat there: If Inter draw and Napoli lose, the sides will finish level on 79 points, and a playoff match will determine the league champion, quite incredibly.

For many of us neutrals, that might be the ultimate result, but for fans of the sides, that could be an agonising fate.
