Age Hareide passed away on Thursday at the age of 72. The former national coach's son, Bendik, confirms the news to VG.no
"Father slept through the night - at home with his family around him. He has now played his last match. We are eternally grateful for all the love we have received during his illness", says the son.
Age Hareide was diagnosed with brain cancer in July and has since struggled with the serious illness.
It was not until November that Hareide's course of illness became publicly known, and subsequently he spoke himself about his serious condition with the assistance of his son.
Hareide was Danish national team coach in the period 2016-2020.
He replaced Morten Olsen and, with a slightly more pragmatic playing style, led Denmark to the World Cup in Russia. He also managed to qualify Denmark for the EURO 2020, but never got the chance to manage Denmark at the final tournament as it was delayed until 2021 as a result of the corona pandemic.
Hareide's contract with the Danish FA expired in the summer of 2020, and although it was not the farewell he had hoped for, a modest three defeats in 40 international matches was an honorable result for the sometimes temperamental Norwegian.
During his almost 40-year coaching career, the former Norwegian national team player also coached Danish Superliga club Brondby. However, after just over two years of employment, he had to resign in the spring of 2002, when his wife was diagnosed with cancer.
He has also been national coach for Norway and Iceland, while he has coached Molde, Viking, and Rosenborg in Norway as well as Helsingborg, Malmö FF and Örgryte in Sweden.
