The hard-fought away win also took the Foxes to the top of the table, level on points with TSV Hannover-Burgdorf. Magdeburg have two more points to their name and have played three games less. Between them, MT Melsungen are still in the race despite their defeat at HSV Hamburg (32-42) on Thursday.
To the match centre: Magdeburg vs. Füchse
"I'm delighted that we were rewarded for our performance," said coach Jan Siewert, who was "mega proud of the energy level" of his team."I think we deserved the win, we didn't let ourselves get rattled in front of this breathtaking crowd. In the end, it was a nail-biting game with the happier ending for us."
Exciting battle for the championship
The focus now turns northwards to the 112th derby between SG Flensburg-Handewitt and record champions THW Kiel on Saturday. German national coach Alfred Gislason is also keeping a close eye on the "super interesting" title race and has predicted a three-way battle between Magdeburg, Berlin and Kiel, the three heavyweights of the league.
In Magdeburg, the Foxes were in the lead for long stretches of the game and even pulled away by four goals in the second half (25-21).
The home side fought its way back in front of 6,600 spectators, but the visitors managed to clinch the important win partly thanks to Mathias Gidsel who in the end of the match managed to find space in the otherwise solid Magdeburg defense well organised by Magnus Saugstrup, and destroy all hope of a comeback for the home side with his goal to 32-30.
Magdeburg's Felix Claar was the game's leading scorer with ten goals, however, Füchse keeper Dejan Milosavljev was the player of the match with 16 saves.
