Three days after reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League, Füchse Berlin on Saturday night were held to a shocking 31-31 (14-16) draw against penultimate-placed HC Erlangen and could lose the lead at the top of the table on Sunday if TSV Hannover-Burgdorf get the better of Frisch Auf Göppingen.

The club from Berlin were made to fight hard in Franconia and trailed by three goals at 15-18 three minutes after the break.

Nils Lichtlein gave Füchse their first lead in the game at 30-29 with four minutes left and seemingly put the visitors on the road to victory However, Erlangen equalised with a goal from Marek Nissen on the final buzzer, when the ball slipped through the fingers of Füchse goalkeeper Lasse Ludwig.

"That hurts so much," said Berlin's Mathias Gidsel, who was recently voted Best Handball player of the World, and added angrily:"We have to win a game like this if we want to become champions."

Melsungen, one of Füchse Berlin's championship rivals, won 32-28 away against Bietigheim, with Danish profile Nikolaj Enderleit contributing seven goals in the win.

The win helped Melsungen close the gap to Füchse Berlin and both clubs are now tied at the top with 40 points. However, TSV Hannover-Burgdorf can overtake both teams with a win on Sunday.
