Mathias Gidsel and Füchse Berlin left no doubt of the outcome when they secured a 40-36 win in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final in Aalborg on Wednesday evening.

Füchse Berlin booked their ticket for the Champions League Final 4 after another comfortable win over Aalborg Handball.

Aalborg failed to stage a miracle against the Bundesliga league leaders and the Champions League's Final 4 for men will consequently be without the participation of Danish handball teams after Füchse Berlin won the return leg 40-36 and thus won the overall contest with a whopping 12 goals.

As in the first match, Mathias Gidsel tormented his Danish compatriots along with team-mate Lasse Andersson.

Each of them scored five goals in the first 19 blistering minutes, and with a 14-12 lead to Füchse Berlin on the scoreboard, it looked like the contest was already decided on aggregate.

With strong support from the local crowd at the Gigantium Arena, the home side with Thomas Arnoldsen back on the team sheet attempted a comeback even if the defense was lagging.

16-18 turned into 19-18 in Danish favor, before another couple of Danish goals from Gidsel and Andersson made it 21-20 in Füchse's favor at the break.

Norwegian Sander Sagosen did his part to inspire a Aalborg comeback, and keeper Fabian Norsten also produced several good saves after he had replaced Niklas Landin.

But the performance was never good enough to really threaten the Germans as the visitors' attacking play was far too exuberant.

Gidsel and Andersson both scored four goals in the second half while Aalborg veteran Henrik Mollgaard ended up on the sidelines in the last European game of his career after he was injured.

With the overall big win and Gidsel in great form, Füchse Berlin will be among the favorites, when the Final 4 event is staged in Cologne in mid-June.
