Goalkeeper legend comes out of retirement to form partnership with Emil Nielsen at Barca

On Tuesday, FC Barcelona handball that Vincent Gérard will come out of retirement to join the Spanish giants.

After eight months out of action, the 38-year-old French goalkeeper has decided to return to action for one of the Champions League favourites.

Asked by L'Equipe about his decision, he said he was "in good shape". He also emphasised the fact that he was arriving as number 2 behind Emil Nielsen: "My role will be to do what I'm asked to do and in no way to take responsibility for a match. After that, you never know what might happen because this is very high-level sport. But my role is clear and identified.

Gérard won the Champions League with Montpellier in 2018, as well as three French Championship titles with PSG (2020, 2021 and 2022). He also has 157 caps for Les Bleus, with whom he won the Olympic handball tournament 2021, the World championship in 2017 and the European championship in 2014.
