Team Esbjerg have never won against Hungarian outfit Gÿor in the Champions and the curse continued Sunday as Györ mainly thanks to an inspiring performance from Danish keeper Sandra Toft won 29-23 despite playing in front of a passionate Danish crowd in Esbjerg.

It was Györ's ninth win against Team Esbjerg in the competition's history as they battled for the top spot in the group.

"We have to give Sandra (Toft) some credit today. She played really well and we missed a lot of chances in which we should have scored. We just were not executing in offence and against a good team like Györ you need to be at 100 per cent", said Esbjerg's Rikke Iversen after the match according the European Handball Federation's website.

The teams were very even in the opening minutes, but Györ's powerful backcourt line began to pull ahead midway through the first half, as they established a six-goal lead.

Esbjerg fought back and managed to narrow the gap before the break, but Györ's well-structured rearguard and efficient attack kept them firmly in control after the interval.

Esbjerg tried their luck with a seven-against-six play, but it did not bring any significant changes. Bruna de Paula netted eight times, while Sandra Toft stopped 14 of Esbjerg's attempts at 37.84 per cent save efficiency.
