The Danish Under-21 national handball team have qualified for the World Cup final for the first time since 2017 after winning the semifinal against Sweden 40-37.

In the semi-final, the Danish talents were severely challenged by Sweden, who forced the tie into extra-time before the Danes proved the stronger in the decisive moments.

The most recent triumph at the Under-21 World Championships dates back to 2005, where players such as René Toft Hansen, Morten Olsen, and Henrik Mollgaard were part of the team.

Since then, the U21 national team has taken part in four World Championship finals, where they have lost the final every time.

The Faroe Islands had the chance to join Denmark in the final and reach their first-ever World Cup final at the Under-21 level.

But after an epic drama with two periods of extra-time needed to decide the matter, the Faroe Islands lost 39-38 to Portugal. Thus, Portugal will face Denmark in the final on Sunday evening at 19.30 CET.

The Faroe Islands will meet Sweden in the bronze medal match.
