Washington Capitals star player Alexander Ovechkin (39) returned to practice on Friday, eyeballing a possible return this weekend against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery said that Ovi is "trending the right way" after practising with linemates Dylan Strome and Aliaksei Protas. Ovechkin also took part in power play drills during practice.

There is currently no decision on his official return.

Washington is sitting in second place in the Eastern Conference with a 23-9-2 record, going 6-3-1 in their last 10 games. The Caps went 10-5 since Ovechkin was injured during November 18th's game against the Utah Hockey Club.

Ovechkin originally led the league with 15 goals in just 18 games. His 15 goals, despite missing over a month, are still tied for eighth-most in the league with nine other players.

The Great 8 currently has 868 career goals and needs just 27 more to surpass Wayne Gretzky's all-time record. He now has 48 games this season to possibly break the record.
