It was their first road multi-goal comeback since Game 5 in the 2016 Easter Conference Finals. This also marked just the second multi-goal comeback win of these playoffs, the first being the Buffalo Sabres' Game 1 win over the Bruins.
Brandon Hagel led the way with two goals in the third period to lead the comeback. Now, the series between the Lightning and Canadiens will head back to Tampa Bay for Game 5 on April 29th.
Recap & Highlights
Not much was going on in the first period. While Montreal had nine shots on goal, Tampa had six, with four of them coming from Braden Point (2) and Nikita Kucherov (2).
The Lightning missed out on their lone power play of the period, as did the Habs with both of their opportunities.
It wouldn't be until 10 minutes into the second period that the Habs got on the board first.
Zachary Bolduc scored his first career playoff goal off a deflection to put Montreal up 1-0.
Montreal would have to go on the penalty kill just seconds later after Alex Newhook was called for hooking, but Tampa wouldn't get anything done with the opportunity to tie things up.
That's when the Habs would pour it on.
Following a Jake Guentzel slashing, Montreal's Cole Caufield scored on the power play for his first of the playoffs to make it a 2-0 game.
The game would start to get a little out of hand from there. About 20 seconds after Caufield's goal, both teams would see two players each sent to the sin bin for roughing.
Tampa's Darren Raddysh would join Zemgus Girgensons and Nick Paul in the box just 10 seconds later after launching the puck over the glass in his end for a delay of game penalty.
After the Habs couldn't take advantage to extend their lead, the game went into a 4-on-4 after a pair of penalties from both teams. That's when Tampa cut the lead in half.
Guentzel scored his first goal on his 10th shot of the series to make it 2-1 with 54 seconds left in the second.
Tampa entered the third period outshooting Montreal 16-14. But it was the Habs who dominated the physical end, outhitting the Lightning 35-20.
Kaiden Guhle, who picked up his first assist of the series on the Bolduc goal, also his first career playoff point, led all players with eight hits - no player on the Lightning had more than three heading into the third.
But goals are what matter most, and that's what the Lightning were focused on in the first two minutes of the final frame.
Hagel scored his fifth goal of the series, and the first on the power play for the Lightning in Game 4, to tie things up 2-2.
The assist came from Kucherov (4) and Guentzel (6).
On 10 shifts the Lightning have scored this series, Hagel has been on the ice for nine of them.
Tampa would go on a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:11 after penalties from Montreal's Mike Mathewson and Jake Evans.
But Montreal would kill off the power plays to send the Habs fans into a frenzy - and it would be silenced immediately.
Hagel scored his second goal of the night, sixth of the playoffs, off a beautiful assist from Kucherov to take a 3-2 lead in the third.
The rest of the Lightning team has five goals combined.
The Habs would go with the empty net 1:40 left in the third for a 6-on-4 advantage following a Kucherov slashing penalty.
But they couldn't find the net as the Lightning secured the Game 4 win to even things up.
Tampa outshot Montreal 20-18, while the latter outhit the former a whopping 51-28.
