Max Verstappen (27) has become a four-time Formula 1 world champion, finishing ahead of Lando Norris (25) in Las Vegas to ensure that he can't be caught at the top of the standings before the end of the season.

The Red Bull driver is only the sixth driver in the history of the sport to win at least four titles, moving level with Alain Prost and Sebastian Vettel and closing the gap to Michael Schumacher (seven), Lewis Hamilton (seven) and Juan Manuel Fangio (five).

Of the six, he's the second youngest to reach the milestone after Vettel, who like the Dutchman also won all four of his titles with Red Bull.

Verstappen did have a harder time winning this title than his previous two thanks to the challenge posed by Norris and McLaren, who closed the gap at the front considerably after some strong development saw their car become the fastest on the grid.

However, thanks to a combination of luck, errors from Norris and his team, and brilliance from the world champion, it never really looked like the driver's title would fall into new hands with the gap in the standings always relatively comfortable.

In Las Vegas, the Red Bull maestro finished fifth, one ahead of Norris, with Mercedes' George Russell winning the race.
