The Premier Soccer League faces a potential headache after it was revealed on Thursday that Mamelodi Sundowns will take part in the Challenger Cup round of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup in Qatar on December 12, the same day as the Carling Knockout final.

It means that should Sundowns reach the decider of South Africa’s League Cup, it will have to be moved as FIFA fixtures trump everything else.

Given their form this season, there is every chance Sundowns will do that, and the PSL will be left with the unenviable task of finding another date for one of their showpiece deciders.

Fortunately, there will be no CAF competition matches for the rest of 2026 after that, but there is a league programme to contend with.

Sundowns are locked into the fixture, having beaten Al Ahli in the African-Asian-Pacific Cup, but do not yet know their opponents.

It will be either Mexican side Toluca or an as-yet-unknown challenger from South America.

Waiting in the final, also to be played in Qatar on December 16, are French giants Paris Saint-Germain, who lifted the UEFA Champions League last season.
