If Hammarby are to avoid finishing second for a third season in a row and win just a second title, this result could become one of the most significant in their history. The home side have won three in a row without conceding since losing to neighbours and fellow title rivals Djurgarden.
Montader Madjed and Isak Bjerkebo both forced excellent saves from the respective goalkeepers in a fiery opening quarter of the match, which culminated in Frank Adjei going down under a challenge from Mohamed Soumah, and though it looked soft, the referee awarded a penalty to the hosts. Victor Lind sent David Celic the wrong way from the spot to put Hammarby in front.
Five minutes into the second half, Bajen increased their lead as Adjei and Hampus Skoglund combined seamlessly on the right before squaring to Paulos Abraham, who slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
Hammarby had to rely on excellent saves from Warner Hahn to preserve their advantage, and their mettle was tested again with seven minutes to go, when Ibrahima Fofana was sent off for a second booking, but the 10 men held on comfortably for the three points, inflicting a second defeat in a row for Sirius.
Having been Sirius' biggest challenger a couple of rounds ago, successive draws have left Djurgarden a further three points behind Hammarby, with the latter at Goteborg, whose own run of three draws has curtailed their push for Europe.
The home side were on top but found visiting goalkeeper Jacob Rinne to be in fine form, yet even he was powerless to stop Goteborg taking a deserved lead late in the first half, as Sam Larsson drove forward and found Nino Zugelj on the left, and he curled the ball around the goalkeeper and in.
But the hosts could not maintain their momentum after the break, and with the hour mark approaching, Djurgarden levelled when Daniel Stensson's cross from the left was met with a deft header from Bo Hegland, guiding the ball home.
The game of two halves continued right up until full-time, as Oskar Fallenius hit the bar with a strike from 25 yards, before Hegland drilled a corner to the edge of the box, where Matias Siltanen was waiting to catch it with the sweetest of volleys, only to see the ball cannon back off the post.
Mjallby eased their relegation fears with a first league win in 10 matches, beating Orgryte to move six points clear of the drop zone, which the home side still occupy after a first loss in three. Jacob Bergstrom's early opener was cancelled out by Mikael Dyrestam's leveller, but when Mjallby also began the second half with a goal from Tony Miettinen, OIS were unable to find a response.
Thursday 29th's other match saw Kalmar stay just two points clear of the drop zone, as they made it back-to-back defeats. Nikola Vasic's strike six minutes from time handed GAIS all three points, taking the Mackerels up to eighth in the standings.
Elsewhere in Round 26, neither Hacken nor Elfsborg could make the most of Djurgarden's draw by only picking up a point each themselves in the race for Europe; Elfsborg drew 2-2 at AIK while Hacken's winning run ended with a 0-0 draw at Brommapojkarna.
Halmstad failed to build on their win in the previous round and remain bottom after losing 3-0 at home to Malmo, but Degerfors' own 3-0 home defeat against Vasteras meant Halmstad are still just three points from potential survival.
