Augsburg stretched their impressive unbeaten run in the Bundesliga to nine games after beating Borussia Dortmund 1-0 at Signal Iduna Park, also ending an unwanted six-match losing streak in away head-to-heads.

The first half was completely dominated by Dortmund, but they somehow found themselves behind. Ramy Bensebaini and Karim Adeyemi were both well off target with early shots, before the Yellow Wall were hit with the ultimate sucker punch.

Marius Wolf whipped a lovely free-kick towards the back post, and Jeffrey Gouweleeuw looped his header over Gregor Kobel and into the bottom corner for his first league goal this season, and Augsburg’s only shot before half-time.

The hosts tried to respond immediately as Julian Brandt flashed his attempt wide, but it was a frustrating half for them as they recorded no shots on target.

Lo and behold, it took just five minutes of the second half for Dortmund to hit the target, in what they thought was an equaliser. Brandt tapped home Nico Schlotterbeck’s knockdown at the back post, but he was just offside as the goal was ruled out.

Unbelievably, Augsburg then had the ball in the net on the hour-mark, but after a lengthy VAR check, it was also disallowed for offside. It was the same combination for the opener, as Wolf found Gouweleeuw from a free-kick at the back post, and he headed across goal as the ball deflected in off Salih Ozcan.

Dortmund pushed for a late leveller, but the visitors netted again on the break in stoppage time through substitute Kristijan Jakic, only for the offside flag to come up once more.

Not only have Augsburg now gone over 500 minutes without conceding a league goal, but the Fuggerstadter also kept a first clean sheet against Dortmund in eight meetings.

In contrast, the Prussians’ lost their four-game unbeaten run as Augsburg move level on points with them in the table.
