Looking to overcome their awful record in this fixture, the hosts got off to the dream start with a penalty in the opening minutes.
Bence Dárdai showed his quickness to get to the ball first before being clumsily wiped out by Julian Wiegl, and Jonas Wind calmly tucked the ball home from the spot to the delight of the crowd. The away side weren’t disheartened however and should’ve equalised ten minutes later, but Tomáš Čvančara was thwarted by Kamil Grabara as the Polish keeper stood tall to deny his dinked effort.
Mönchengladbach kept coming, and Robin Hack should’ve done better after being picked out by an inventive free-kick, but his volley was aimed straight at Grabara who held on. Despite dominating the half, Mönchengladbach couldn’t find a leveller and had to stand firm against a flurry of Wolfsburg corners just before HT to go in 1-0 down.
The hosts almost repeated their fast start from the first start in the second period, but Mohamed Amoura’s clever attempt with the outside of his foot cracked against the post with Moritz Nicolas well-beaten.

Wolfsburg were in control of the second half and doubled their lead just before the hour mark thanks to a fantastic bit of play. Joakim Mæhle was given space to drift inside and found Wind in the box, but the full-back continued his run and latched on to a clever back-heel from his Danish compatriot before tucking the ball past Nicholas.
Mönchengladbach couldn’t find their way back into the game and completely crumbled in the final 15 minutes. Maximilian Arnold bagged the third after another fine move before darting into the box and producing a fine angled finish.
Lukas Nmecha only came on in the latter stages, but he had to time to strike twice, tapping home from close range on both occasions. The flurry of goals wasn’t over as Shio Fukuda struck a late consolation, but it was too little too late.
The three points make a huge difference in the table as Wolfsburg rise up to 6th, while Borussia Mönchengladbach are only three points further back in 11th after back-to-back defeats.
