Augsburg’s winless H2H run against RB Leipzig extended to 17 matches following a goalless Bundesliga draw at WWK Arena.

Augsburg have come into a good bit of form recently, having recovered from their stuttering start to the season to go unbeaten in their last five matches. Meanwhile, Leipzig ended their four-game winless run with a victory over St. Pauli last weekend.

Lutsharel Geertruida came close to opening the scoring for the visitors when his effort from 25 yards flew narrowly wide of the left post, shortly before Chrislain Matsima saw his header at the back post gathered by Péter Gulácsi.

The home side were very much in the contest against their more illustrious opponents throughout the first half, and they appealed for a penalty with the half-hour mark approaching for a potential handball by Ridle Baku, but the referee waved play on with David Raum testing Finn Dahmen a couple of minutes later.

The hosts might have taken the lead six minutes before half time, but Alexis Claude-Maurice’s effort from just outside the area, which was heading for the left-hand corner, was impressively pushed away by Gulácsi.

Die Roten Bullen have not tasted defeat at WWK Arena since 2017, yet they had their opportunities in the second half as Xavi Simons’ effort from just outside the area went narrowly wide of the left post.

Benjamin Šeško’s header from point-blank range was then blocked on its path to goal, but Augsburg remained in the fight, albeit without the attacking threat they carried in the first half.

The visitors were looking the likelier to find a late winning goal, and Kosta Nedeljković very nearly came up trumps in the closing stages, but his effort crashed back off the crossbar as the two teams were forced to settle for a point apiece.

The result sees Augsburg remain 12th in the table, while Leipzig stay fourth but in danger of being overtaken by the chasing pack.
