The reasons why Bayern Munich have shown interest in Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi

When the summer transfer window slammed shut earlier this year one of the biggest surprises came with the news that Crystal Palace captain, Marc Guehi, remained at the club.

The 25-year-old centre-back had seemingly agreed a deal to move to Liverpool, however, the Eagles inability to get themselves a suitable replacement saw Oliver Glasner veto any move to the Reds.

Guehi leading by example

To Guehi's credit, he hasn't sulked or made waves in the media about his situation, he's simply got his head down and got on with the job in hand.

And what a job he and his fellow Palace colleagues are doing in the 2025/26 season.

After winning the FA Cup for the first time in their history at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, they began this one by beating Liverpool at Wembley on penalties to earn themselves the Community Shield.

Thereafter, they remained unbeaten until this past weekend when a 93rd-minute Jack Grealish goal saw Everton take all three points from their fixture at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

That unbeaten run also took in their first ever European fixture, a Conference League away game against Dynamo Kyiv, and Guehi's excellence at the back as well as his strong leadership is arguably one of the major reasons for the club's success.

Bayern throw their hat in the ring

When one considers too that in the past few seasons the club have lost two of their best players in Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze, it makes Palace's start that much more impressive.

Reports suggest, however, that the South London outfit may have to contend with yet more interest in Guehi, be that in January or next summer's transfer window.

Bayern Munich are the latest European giant to be linked with his services, and with Olise already there, it could make a Bundesliga transition that much easier for the England international.

It's easy to understand why the Bavarians have thrown their hats into the ring too.

The solidity in Guehi's performances have become a regular feature of why Palace have become so difficult to beat of late.

Error-free performances

Only Premier League leaders Arsenal have conceded less than the five goals shipped by the South Londoners to date in 25/26, and three of the seven games played in the English top-flight this season have seen Palace keep a clean sheet.

Of the 15 tackles that Guehi has attempted in the league so far in the current campaign, he's won 11 of them for an impressive success rate of 73.3%.

22 headed clearances already is exactly half of the 44 he made in total across the entire 2023/24 season, evidencing a vast improvement in that area of his game too.

One outstanding stat that is often overlooked comes with the knowledge of just how error-free Guehi's natural game actually is.

In the last four seasons he has made only two errors that have directly led to goals. Just two mistakes in 125 games during that period.

Passing game on point

Another area in which Guehi excels is with his ability to break up play and win back possession for his side, something he does with real aplomb.

Taking the same sample size of the last four seasons, he's intercepted an attack on no less than 655 separate occasions.

His passing range remains at the highest level too, with 79% completion being the lowest he's recorded since the start of the 2022/23 season.

In general, his long or short passing game has been sensational, and generally falls in the mid-80s to mid-90s bracket.

For a central defender playing at the highest level in the modern game those numbers and Guehi's consistency is barely believable, and the real shame for Glasner and Palace owner, Steve Parish, is that the club seem to not be in a position to meet his expectations moving forward.

Defenders of such quality are a rare commodity

Trying to replace him is likely to prove even more problematic than when Olise and Eze left for Bayern and Arsenal respectively, given that centre-backs of such evident quality are a rare commodity.

For the player himself, if he's genuinely no longer able to be fulfilled by his current club, the question remains as to where he will end up next.

It's abundantly clear he has plenty of suitors both in England and on the continent, and moving abroad is no longer seen as a reason for a player not to be picked for his national side. Just ask Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher or Harry Kane.

For now, Palace can still rely on the highest level of service from their captain. A player who leads by example and who will improve whichever team is lucky enough to get a deal over the line for him.
