Former Inter Milan forward Obafemi Martins (40) believes the Nerazzurri remain contenders to defend their Serie A title, despite their current position.

Simone Inzaghi’s men maintained their scintillating form in Serie A, thrashing Lazio 6-0 on Sunday to extend their unbeaten streak to 10 matches in the Italian top flight.

Inter set a new Serie A record for away goals in a calendar year, netting 47 times on the road in 2024, following their dominant performances throughout the season.

Despite trailing Atalanta and Napoli in third place, the former Super Eagles striker remains optimistic about their title chances, acknowledging that the road to success will demand significant effort and resilience.

"It depends on their determination. When you’re trailing a team by three or four points in Serie A, overtaking them becomes quite challenging," Martins told Flashscore, emphasising the effort required for Inter Milan’s title aspirations.

"No one expected them to clinch the title last season, yet they defied the odds to become league champions. This season, I hope they can replicate that success, but it won’t come easy with strong competitors like Atalanta and Napoli in the mix.

"To achieve this, they must consistently win their games and hope rivals lose. They have a solid squad performing exceptionally well right now, and if they maintain this form, anything is possible."

When asked whether Inter can end their Champions League drought this season, the former Levante and Newcastle star suggested that it’s still too early to make such a prediction.

Before their 1-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in their most recent outing, the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza giants had been in impressive form, securing four consecutive victories in the competition.

He added: "It’s too early to predict a Champions League winner. While playing a draw at Manchester City and defeating Arsenal were impressive, it doesn’t guarantee success.

"The competition is long and there are still many challenges ahead before a clear favorite emerges.

"They must first reach the semi-finals before any solid judgments can be made. Until then, it’s a wait-and-see situation to evaluate their true potential in the Champions League.

"Don’t get me wrong, I’m an Inter Milan fan for life and fully believe in their potential because I know what they’re capable of on a good day.

"But we need to manage expectations carefully to avoid putting undue pressure on the team."

The Italians are currently sixth in the Champions League standings with 13 points from their last six matches (four wins, one draw, and one loss).

They will be looking to extend their momentum as they head into their upcoming away fixture against Sparta Prague on January 22, 2025.

Martins also praised Simone Inzaghi's impressive leadership of Inter Milan since taking over from Antonio Conte in 2021.

Inter have continued to perform strongly, maintaining a competitive edge in Serie A and European competitions, showcasing his tactical acumen and ability to get the best out of his players.

"Inter Milan are a massive club with a rich history," he added.

"And while previous managers have done well, what stands out about Inzaghi is his focus on nurturing the younger generation. The team plays cohesively, which makes this Inter side unique and exciting."

In his first season as manager of Inter Milan, Inzaghi achieved notable success, winning the Supercoppa Italiana and Coppa Italia. He also guided the team to a second-place finish in Serie A, where they boasted the league's most prolific attack, scoring 84 goals.

In his second season, Simone Inzaghi's standout achievement was guiding Inter Milan to the Champions League final after securing a dramatic semi-final win over AC Milan.

On January 15, 2024, Simone Inzaghi finished third in the 2023 Best FIFA Men’s Coach award, following Pep Guardiola and Luciano Spalletti. Just three months later, Inzaghi led Inter Milan to win the 2023–24 Serie A, securing the title with a 2–1 victory in the Milan Derby.
