The numbers behind Alisson's incredible Champions League performance against PSG

Paris Saint-Germain against Liverpool was always likely to be a tight affair given just how well the two European giants have been playing of late.

Before their defeat to the Reds, courtesy of a smash-and-grab thanks to Harvey Elliott in the 87th minute, just 43 seconds after coming on at the Parc des Princes - incidentally the latest ever winning goal for Liverpool in the Champions League knockout stages - PSG had been unbeaten in 22 games in all competitions of which 19 were wins.

Liverpool, for their part, had lost three of the last 16. However, the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg loss against Tottenham was reversed in the second leg, the defeat against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League in the final group stage game meant little and the other loss, to Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup, whilst embarrassing was arguably in the competition that became the least of the Reds' priorities (behind the Premier League and Champions League).

It's worth pointing out too that before the first loss in that run, Liverpool had only suffered one defeat in the previous 28 in all competitions stretching back to the very first game of the 2024/25 season.

Nine goals (PSG) and five goals (Liverpool) conceded in this season's Champions League prior to the playoff stage hinted at two defences that were rock solid in the competition, whilst 14 and 17 goals scored respectively in those eight games further suggested that this might not be a high scoring match - and so it proved.

However, that's more to do with the level of Alisson Becker's historic performance than anything else, because he was simply sensational.

His nine saves in the match are the most on record (since 2003/04) by a Liverpool goalkeeper in a single Champions League match, and the most made by the custodian in any of his games this season.

He admitted after the game during a post-match interview that it was "probably the best game of my career," something that his teammates and Arne Slot will undoubtedly agree with.

Against Ousmane Dembele in particular, Alisson stood tall and kept making the Frenchman think rather than the former Barca man being able to finish as naturally as he has done all season, both in Europe and Ligue 1.

The PSG star certainly won't be happy with not having any reward from his eight shots in the game, the highest total for a Paris Saint-Germain player in the Champions League.

A 100% save percentage on the night was the 10th time Alisson has recorded that perfect mark in his 25 games in all competitions this season too, but rarely can that statistic have meant more than it did as Liverpool trudged off the pitch after 97 minutes of suffering.

As if to really ram home just how under the cosh the visitors were for much of the game, Liverpool won the match despite having 25 fewer shots than PSG (two to 27) - the joint largest negative difference in shots by a winning team on record (from 03/04) in a Champions League knockout-stage game.

In fact, half-time in the game saw only the second time since Opta records began (03/04) in the Champions League that Liverpool had faced 12+ shots in the opening 45 and not conceded a goal.

The final score also saw Liverpool's sixth clean sheet in nine Champions League matches this season, and only in 2001/02 (eight), 2006/07 (seven), and 2020/21 (seven) have they recorded more in a European Cup/Champions League campaign.

Three successive matches won whilst keeping a clean sheet saw Liverpool achieve that feat for the first time since Arne Slot's first three games as manager back in August and September of 2024, and what a time to replicate the Dutchman's beginnings at Anfield, too.

The Premier League outfit scored with their only shot on target on Wednesday whilst PSG squandered their 10 on target and were unable to find the net even with a particularly high xG of 1.78 across the entirety of the match.

Alisson's four clearances in the game were the joint second-highest and, incredibly, his seven passes into the final third of the pitch were only bettered by Trent Alexander-Arnold (10) and Dominik Szoboszlai (12).

44 touches of the ball would also indicate how hard the Brazilian worked given that Alexander-Arnold (45) and Andrew Robertson (54) were the only two outfield players for Liverpool with more.

He was lucky that his pass accuracy of 57.1% - Alisson's lowest of the entire 24/25 campaign - didn't lead to further problems, although as the attached graphic indicates, his four long passes to Darwin Nunez all found their target, and that was only bettered on the night with five to Ibrahim Konate, albeit over a much shorter distance.

The wider conversation that needs to be had, of course, is regarding what happens next season with the 32-year-old, still a young age for a goalkeeper.

Slot remarked that Alisson was the "best goalkeeper in the world" in his post-match press conference, immediately putting pressure on the incoming Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will join Liverpool this summer.

The 24-year-old is unlikely to want to wait patiently in line in the way that Caoimhin Kelleher has, but maybe that's precisely the strength in depth that Liverpool want in that area of the pitch to ensure that either Alisson or Mamardashvili remain ultra consistent in their level of performance next season.
