Eredivisie outfit AZ survived a very early red card in their away game in Liechtenstein as they beat Vaduz 1-0 and made it through to the play-off round of the UEFA Conference League.

Mexx Meerdink was given a first start of the season as AZ boss Maarten Martens changed his side in several places. Mateo Chavez made his full debut for the Alkmaar side, and Zico Buurmeester returned to the starting lineup for the first time since last season.

AZ went down to ten men very early on when Ro-Zangelo Daal grabbed two yellow cards inside the first seven minutes, both for late challenges with no risk in sight.

Vaduz tried to pile on the pressure on AZ, but were unable to truly test the Alkmaar side in the first half.

That pattern continued in the second half, in which AZ let Vaduz control play and relied on a compact defence to see out the match and hold onto their 3-0 aggregate lead.

Without facing much danger whatsoever, AZ got a golden opportunity to take the lead in Vaduz when substitute Florian Hoxha brought down Troy Parrott, who replaced Mexx Meerdink in the final 15 minutes, in the box. The Irishman stepped up to take the penalty and left Benjamin Buchel no chance: 1-0.

The score would remain on the board after Buchel conceded a goal with the only shot on goal AZ recorded all game long.

The Alkmaar outfit will take on Bulgarian side Levski Sofia in the play-off round of the Conference League, which will take place in the coming two weeks.
