Goteborg scored a late equaliser to draw away at Gent in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League (UECL), but it wasn't enough to prevent defeat on aggregate to the Belgian side.

KAA Gent 1-1 IFK Goteborg (2-1 on aggregate)

For the second round in a row, Goteborg had suffered defeat in the first leg at home, but this time, a comeback on the road looked unlikely from the off, as Laszlo Benes twice went close for the hosts in the opening exchanges.

A Gent goal looked inevitable, and it arrived with the half-hour mark approaching. A beauty of a cross from the left wing from Tiago Araujo was inch-perfect for Matties Volckaert to attack and head past Viktor Andersson.

Tobias Heintz was one of Goteborg's more threatening players in the first half, but his and his side's luck was out when he was forced off before half-time. Sam Larsson tried to put Gent under pressure, but the lead rarely looked in doubt.

In the final 15 minutes, saves from Andersson prevented Araujo and then Momodou Sonko from putting the tie to bed, and then, having rarely come close, Goteborg were level on the night five minutes from time, when Filip Ottosson's corner was headed in at the back post by Saidou Alioum.

But the Swedish side were unable to find another late goal to send the tie to extra time, as their 27-year wait to return to European competitions proper goes on. Gent head to the play-off round, where they will meet Hibernian of Scotland.
