Striker Chuba Akpom will return to Ajax when his loan stint at Ligue 1 side Lille ends this summer.

Englishman Akpom started the season with Ajax as their third striker behind Brian Brobbey and Wout Weghorst, but was loaned out to Lille in January. The fifth-placed Ligue 1 side confirmed on Sunday that Akpom will return to Amsterdam.

Akpom's announcement went paired with the announcement of Dutch left-back Mitchel Bakker returning to Atalanta following his loan spell in France. "Mission accomplished for Mitchel Bakker and Chuba Akpom," the club statement said.

"On loan from Atalanta and Ajax Amsterdam, respectively, Mitchel Bakker and Chuba Akpom have brought their professionalism and experience to the table as valuable building blocks for this season.

"The former, who played 35 games (scoring four goals), stood out for his versatility and ability to perform at the highest level. The latter, who arrived at the end of the winter transfer window, appeared 14 times, scoring three valuable goals."

Akpom, who graduated from Arsenal's youth academy, joined Ajax in the summer of 2023 after scoring 28 goals in 40 Championship matches for Middlesbrough. Since joining the Amsterdam side, the 29-year-old has scored 22 goals in 63 games across all competitions.
