FC Groningen captain Stije Resink has sustained a cruciate ligament injury in Sunday's game at FC Volendam, the midfielder confirmed on Instagram.

The reported Ajax and Benfica target suffered the injury early in the second half of FC Groningen's away game at FC Volendam. Resink stepped in to intercept the ball when his knee buckled, after which he had to be stretchered off.

"Dear all. Unfortunately, I suffered a cruciate ligament injury yesterday during the match against Volendam," Resink said in an Instagram post.

"I will therefore be out of action for a while and will focus on my recovery. Thank you for your support and all your messages!"

The 22-year-old was linked to Ajax and Benfica during the January transfer window, but wasn't allowed to leave FC Groningen until at least the summer. His knee injury will prevent him from making a move during the summer.

In 24 Eredivisie games this season, Resink scored 5 goals and 5 assists, while also playing every possible minute until Sunday's forced substitution.
