It is the end of a era in the history of the Finland Women's national team, as long-serving captain and goalkeeper, Tinja-Riikka Korpela, has announced her international retirement.

The 39-year-old made 128 appearances for The Boreal Owls, the last of which came in April's 3-0 win over Hungary in the UEFA Women's Nations League.

She was a member of the Finland squad which narrowly missed out on a place in the Quarter-finals of the UEFA Women's EURO 2025, but was an unused substitute for her side's Group A matches.

Having played for the national side at youth level, Korpela made her senior debut in 2007 against Sweden, and had made the number one shirt her own by the time Finland hosted the Women's EURO 2009, where they reached the last eight.

She also featured at the EUROs in 2013 and 2022, wearing the captain's armband at the latter, a year on from making her 100th appearance in a FIFA Women's World Cup qualifier against Georgia.

"I have been able to be part of this for a long time; 18 years in the women's national team and on top of that, years in the youth national team, so I've worn the Finland shirt for well over 20 years. It's been an incredibly big honour for me," Korpela told the Finnish FA.

The veteran is intending to continue playing at club level. In 2024 she joined Swiss side Servette, having played for the likes of Roma, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Bayern Munich.

"Now it's time to put my national team game on the back burner. My body can no longer do what my head wants and my head can't stand the fact that my body can't," she explained.

"I can say that Boreal Owls are in good hands in the future. And I'm sure we'll hear more about this team!"

"Thank you everyone. For everything," she concluded.
