There was no shortage of excitement on the football pitch over the weekend. In the UK, the English and Scottish Cups featured some giant killings, while Ajax returned to the top of the Eredivisie and Portuguese club Benfica had a bittersweet win over Moreirense.

Winners: Plymouth and Queen's Park

The cup, in whatever country, always offers an opportunity to showcase one of the reasons why football is so exciting. Teams from lower leagues have the chance to test themselves against top-quality opposition and surprises are always lurking. This weekend was a cup weekend in England and Scotland, and it featured two thunderous falls.

In a real David-versus-Goliath clash, Championship side Plymouth hosted Premier League leaders Liverpool and the biblical story came true at Home Park. A penalty from Ryan Hardie was enough for David to overcome Goliath 1-0.

Further north, Queen's Park produced one of the biggest shocks in Scottish football by knocking out Rangers in the Scottish Cup at Ibrox. Considered the oldest club in the country, Queen's Park hadn't beaten Rangers since 1882 and will be playing in the quarter-finals for the first time since 1983.

For Rangers, the defeat against their Glasgow rivals meant they were eliminated by a second-tier side, something that hadn't happened since 1966/67. An afternoon to forget, especially for captain James Tavernier who saw Calum Ferrie save a penalty in injury time.

Losers: Adana Demirspor

The 23rd round of the Turkish league season was marred by Adana Demirspor's decision to abandon their game with Galatasaray.

After seeing Alvaro Morata open the scoring with a penalty in the 12th minute, Mustafa Alper Avci's players were unable to manage their frustration when another penalty was awarded in the 34th minute for a foul by Semih Guler on Dries Mertens.

After walking off to the changing room, the players refused to return to the pitch and the match was abandoned. The protest led to the departure of chairman Bedirhan Durak and it remains to be seen what the FA's decision will be towards a club that has already been penalised this season and has five points from 21 matches, 18 away from safety.

Winners: Celta Vigo

Leading 2-0, Real Betis were taken by surprise and ultimately lost 3-2 to Celta Vigo, but the Andalusian club's biggest defeat was off the pitch, with some fans with their faces covered doing Nazi salutes.

Celta Vigo's response? To use music as a weapon. When there were only Betis fans left in the stands, the sound system in the stadium blared Bella Ciao, the Italian song of the anti-fascist resistance, and Grandola Vila Morena, the song by Zeca Afonso that sparked the anti-fascist revolution of 1974 in Portugal.

Loser: Fermin Lopez

Fermin Lopez didn't make the most of the opportunity given to him by Hansi Flick. Brought on at half-time in Seville, the Spanish midfielder only had 17 minutes on the pitch, in a real rollercoaster of emotions.

54 seconds after coming on, he opened the scoring when he responded to Pedri's cross. 17 minutes later he made a reckless tackle on Djibril Sow and left Barcelona with 10 men for the remainder of the match, which they eventually won 4-1.

Not since Vitor Roque in February 2024 had a Barcelona player scored and been sent off in the same game. It was only the second time it had happened in the 21st century. A place in history that the midfielder won't want to occupy.

Winners: Ajax

The most successful club in Dutch football with 36 league titles, Ajax haven't had an easy time of it in recent years. In the last two seasons they've seen their main rivals become champions (Feyenoord in 2023 and PSV in 2024) and last year they finished fifth, behind even Twente and AZ Alkmaar.

However, normality seems to have been restored this weekend. Taking advantage of PSV's slip-up against Willem II, the Amsterdam club - coached by Francesco Farioli - beat Fortuna Sittard and climbed to first place in the Eredivisie with 51 points, the same as their Eindovhen rivals. Not since November 2022 have Ajax been top of the league.

Losers: Benfica

In Portugal, it's often said that 'bad luck never comes alone', and Benfica witnessed the truth of that expression unfortunately for coach Bruno Lage. Trailing 2-1 at home to Moreirense, the Reds (who would go on to win 3-2) were in control of the game, but it all seemed to come crashing down in the 33rd minute.

In an attempt to press, Alexander Bah picked up a serious injury and was replaced by Antonio Silva. Two minutes later, Manu Silva tried to intercept a ball and was forced to leave the pitch in severe pain.

The next day, the worst-case scenario was confirmed: both players had ruptured their cruciate ligaments and would not play again this season. Bah is the only starting right-back in the first-team squad while Manu Silva only arrived in January for 12 million euros and only played two games.

Winner: Randal Kolo Muani

Discarded by Luis Enrique at PSG, Kolo Muani has been reborn at Juventus. The French striker scored twice against Como and as well as securing victory for the Old Lady, he became the first player to score in his first three Serie A games in 30 years.

That's five goals in three games in a Juventus shirt, more than half of the number he scored in 40 games in a PSG shirt last season. It's a change of scenery that seems to have benefited everyone.

Loser: Brazilian football

For the second week running, there have been violent clashes in Brazilian football.

This Sunday, before the derby between Atletico Mineiro and Cruzeiro, fans of the latter were attacked with iron bars and flares. More than 100 people were involved in the skirmish, which left two people in serious condition. One of them, aged 26, suffered a serious brain injury.

This just isn't football.
