2024 is over and Viktor Gyokeres has been crowned the top scorer of the calendar year, ahead of the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski. An unimaginable achievement for those who saw something special in him more than 10 years ago.

There are few who don't recognise the characteristic celebration: the intertwined hands covering the face. The Bane mask is the talk of Europe and the world; after all, no one has scored more goals than Viktor Gyokeres in 2024.

62 goals in 63 games for Sporting and Sweden. Practically one a game, an average achieved by very few - Lewandowski, Cristiano Ronaldo, Fernando Peyroteo, Lionel Messi or Gerd Müller, to name a few - who made Gyokeres the king of 2024 by performing what Eduardo Galeno considered "the miracle that happens so rarely".

It's a top-of-the-world finish that few could have imagined 10 years ago. Flashscore travelled to Bromma, on the outskirts of Stockholm, where Gyokeres started playing as a professional. It was on the synthetic turf of the modest Grimsta IP, home of Brommapojkarna, that the young Viktor began to make a name for himself. And all on the advice of David Eklund.

Head of scouting for the current 10th-placed team in the last edition of the Allsvenskan, Eklund was the one who discovered Gyokeres playing for Aspudden-Tellus and took him to the great academy of Swedish football in 2014.

"The first time I saw him I was 12 years old. I was in charge of scouting and my job was to watch a lot of games and talk to a lot of players. At Bromma we want to have a good control over the Stockholm area, that's how I saw him play and then I started following him very closely," he explained to Flashscore.

A teenager, Gyokeres was already excelling in a parameter where he is now king. In fact, he was the team's top scorer in 2017, when they climbed to the top flight thanks to his 13 goals in the Superettan.

"He wasn't very good on the ball. If you think about it, we had players who were good on the ball, and he was OK, nothing marvellous, but when you put him in the box and get the ball to him he's going to score.

"He was very good at that. I think everyone thought he was a reasonable player, but he wasn't the star of the academy. He was good, he scored goals and that's why I saw something in him," he revealed, drawing parallels with today: "He was a very strong player, good at finishing, good at scoring goals. Very similar to what he is today.

And although Eklund saw something special in him, he never thought the Swedish international would reach the top of the world. "I thought he was going to be a professional, but at the level he's reached? No," he emphasised, highlighting his move to Brighton as a key moment: "When he was young, he didn't talk much. He was nice, friendly with his teammates. It was when he left for England that he realised he had to be tougher."

His departure from Sporting seems increasingly inevitable, especially in the summer of 2025. The big sharks of European football are not oblivious to Gyokeres' goals.

And despite recognising that he doesn't see the Sporting striker play regularly - "when I leave work I switch off from football" - Eklund was certain: "Every team needs a player like Viktor. If he goes to Spain he'll score goals, if he goes to England he'll score goals. He can play in any league.

Those are the predictions of the man who noticed Gyokeres before the striker put on the mask.
