African footballers lit up Europe’s top leagues over the weekend with standout performances.

England

Nicolas Jackson was Chelsea’s hero having scored the only goal in their 1-0 victory over Everton.

The Senegal international put the Blues ahead at Stamford Bridge in the 27th minute having been teed up by Enzo Fernandez for his 10th goal of the 2024-25 campaign.

Despite a late surge from the Toffees, the hosts held firm to secure all points at stake to boost their Champions League qualification hopes.

In East Sussex, two Africans were on target as Brighton and Hove Albion saw off West Ham United 3-2 in a keenly contested league showdown at Falmer Stadium.

Swedish midfielder Yasin Ayari put the Seagulls ahead in the 13th minute with an assist from Jack Hinshelwood, but Ghanaian international Mohamed Kudus leveled for the hosts three minutes into the second half.

Seven minutes before full time, Tomas Soucek gave the Hammers a deserved lead, but they eventually fell to defeat as Kaoru Mitoma and Cameroonian international Carlos Baleba scored late for the visitors.

Elsewhere, Antoine Semenyo scored his ninth league goal of the season as Bournemouth played out a 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

Unbeaten in their last three league matches, the Cherries welcomed the Red Devils to Vitality Stadium.

The Ghana international’s superb 23rd minute strike looked set to hand the Cherries three points but they were undone by the visitors’ last-gasp finish by Daish star Rasmus Hojlund

Liverpool crushed Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 to clinch the Premier League title, with Mohamed Salah among the scorers.

Dominic Solanke had given the visitors in the 12th minute but goals from Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, and Cody Gakpo in the goal-laden first half put the Reds back in control.

Salah scored the fourth goal three minutes after the hour mark while the rout was complete in the 69th minute when Destiny Udogie turned the ball inside his own net.

Germany

Serhou Guirassy is enjoying his maiden season as Borussia Dortmund as he inspired the team to a hard-fought 3-2 win at Hoffenheim.

Inspired by his four goals from his last two outings, the Guinea international opened scoring for his team in the 20th minute with Daniel Svensson providing the assist.

The African missed a chance to complete his brace when he missed from the penalty spot but that did not prevent them from securing all points at stake.

With four wins in their last five matches and 13 points from a possible 15, Dortmund have climbed back into a European qualifying spot for the first time since matchday 15.

France

Paris Saint-Germain suffered their first defeat in Ligue 1 this season as they bowed 3-1 to Nice at Parc des Princes.

Despite dominating ball possession, they conceded first when Badredine Bouanani found Morgan Sanson who finished past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Although Fabian Ruiz restored parity for the hosts in the 41st minute, Morgan completed his brace in the 46th minute.

With 20 minutes left to play, Burundi international Youssouf Ndayishimiye extended the lead after connecting with Bouanani’s free-kick.

In another fixture, Le Havre and AS Monaco ended their affair 1-1 at Stade Oceane.

With the game just 22 minutes old, Egypt international Ahmed Hassan (Koka) put his team ahead after heading Junior Mwanga’s cross past a helpless goalkeeper Philipp Kohn.

Even at that, the relegation-threatened team could only share points with the visitors through Mika Biereth’s equalizer.

Algeria international Amine Gouiri was on song thrice in Olympique Marseille’s 4-1 demolition of Brest.

The Algeria international struck first after just eight minutes after controlling a pass from Luiz Henrique before drilling past goalkeeper Gregoire Coudert.

He got his second on the stroke of half-time before completing his treble three minutes after the hour mark.

Despite failing to keep a clean sheet for the seventh consecutive game, Roberto De Zerbi’s men climbed back to second in the table.
