Former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet has called for the club to provide Enzo Maresca with a new centre-back.

It hasn't been the perfect start to the season for the Club World Cup winners played out a 0-0 stalemate with Crystal Palace on the opening day before beating West Ham 5-1.

However, Poyet insists Chelsea dropping points to Palace isn't something to worry about, telling Tribalfootball.com: "I think there was too much pressure on Chelsea going into the game against Crystal Palace.

"Chelsea have had a great few months, winning the UEFA Conference League and the Club World Cup, so everyone was just expecting them to breeze past Palace despite Palace beating Liverpool in the Community Shield less than a week before.

“To me, it just looked like the typical first game of the season for Chelsea. It was important that they didn’t lose the game, but a point from a tough first game isn’t the end of the world. I wouldn’t read too much into it. Chelsea will be much improved over the next few games now the cobwebs have been blown off, and they will be winning plenty of games soon.”

Board must listen to Maresca

Just before that match, Blues manager Enzo Maresca went public with the need for a new centre-half to be signed after the knee injury suffered by Levi Colwill last week. Surgery means the England defender will miss much of the season.

Asked about Maresca being so public about his wish, Poyet stated: "If the manager has said something like that publicly, then the club will have to make the signing a priority. Every coach has their plan, and when an injury disrupts it, then it’s frustrating, but at least Levi’s injury was before the transfer window shut.

“I fully expect Chelsea to go into the market now and sign a centre back. If signing one permanently doesn’t work out, then I’m sure they will bring someone in on loan, as this will help them cope for the season until Colwill is hopefully back playing this time next season.

"I’d say there’s a 99% chance that Chelsea signs a centre back before the end of the transfer window.”

Over-reliance on Palmer?

Meanwhile, regarding concerns that Chelsea could find themselves in trouble if Cole Palmer finds himself marked out of games this season, Poyet is confident the England midfielder will learn how to handle the extra attention.

Maresca has also admitted he is worried about Chelsea being overly reliant on Palmer, and Poyet says: “It’s very difficult for a manager to alleviate the pressure on an individual player because the reason Chelsea became over-reliant on Cole Palmer is that he’s an extremely creative player.

"Opponents will focus much more on Palmer now than they did a year ago, which provides opportunities for other players in the team to be impactful as they have more space with Cole attracting more attention.

“However, Cole is a phenomenal player, and he will find a way to deal with the extra attention he is getting from opposing players now. He will learn how to adapt and link up with his teammates in different ways to contribute to Chelsea winning games.

"They have a squad full of great players, and if everyone keeps performing, Chelsea will feel much more well-rounded.”
