Tottenham are continuing to monitor the situation of Manchester United’s highly rated midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as uncertainty lingers over his long-term future at Old Trafford.

Spurs touched base during the summer transfer window to explore whether a deal could be struck, but United were not willing to let him leave. Despite that firm stance, there is still a feeling that Mainoo’s role under Ruben Amorim is far from clear.

He was once again left on the bench at the weekend, and Amorim clearly still has doubts about how the England international fits into his preferred system.

United’s manager has indicated that Mainoo is in direct competition with Bruno Fernandes for a starting berth - and with the captain’s role as strong as ever, there seems little chance of him being displaced.

For now, Mainoo is staying patient and conducting himself with professionalism, but sources believe he will be forced to reassess if his pathway to regular minutes does not improve.

A significant factor in all this is that Mainoo has not yet agreed a new contract. He remains one of the lower earners in the United squad, and that is an issue which was expected to be resolved this year.

Back in the summer, Mainoo even requested a loan move to guarantee playing time.

That was blocked by United, who assured him he would be given opportunities to break back into the line-up while also receiving the reward of a new long-term deal.

Neither promise is yet materialising in the way he might have hoped.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are watching developments closely.

Sources indicate that they remain extremely keen and see Mainoo as a player who ticks a number of boxes for the profile of midfielder they want to add to their squad.

Spurs are building towards an ambitious 2026 and believe their project would prove appealing if the player decides to consider his options.

For now, Mainoo’s immediate focus remains on trying to impress Amorim and force his way back into the reckoning.

Yet unless his role changes and United satisfy his needs, there is every chance this saga will gather momentum in the months ahead - with Tottenham ready to make their move.
