At just 20 years old, Tusker striker Ryan Wesley Ogam is taking the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League by storm.

Ogam, who joined the Ruaraka-based outfit at the start of the 2024/25 season from the now-defunct Rainbow FC, has already scored 15 goals in the Premier League from 13 matches so far this season and created three assists.

As if that is not enough, Ogam’s current form before the halfway stage of the league campaign has threatened to shatter the all-time Kenyan Premier League goal scorers record per every season currently being held by striker Elvis Rupia, who plays for Tanzania Mainland Premier League side Singida Black Stars.

Rupia emerged the top scorer at the end of the 2022-23 Kenyan Premier League after scoring 27 goals for Kenya Police FC breaking a 47-year-old record of 26 goals set by Maurice Ochieng back in the 1976 Premier League season when record champions Gor Mahia went on to win the season unbeaten.

Ogam has left defenders in the Premier League gasping for air, his dribbling skills and ability to finish off half chances have proved difficult for many to handle.

His latest superb display came on Sunday, January 19th, when he scored a brace to help Tusker defeat rivals Gor Mahia 2-1 and cement their lead at the 18-team league table. The win enabled Tusker to reach 33 points from 17 matches, amassed from 10 wins, three draws and four defeats.

His first goal against K’Ogalo was a beauty, Dennis Oguta, who had just been introduced for Fabian Adikiny, picked the ball in midfield before sending through Ogam, the striker doing well to beat the keeper and tap it into an empty net.

The second saw Dennis Wanjala swing a beautiful delivery off a free-kick finding Ogam’s run at the back post, and the forward guided the ball home with the inside of his boot.

His first top-flight assist came in the 3-1 win against Murang’a Seal. During the fixture, he found the back of the net twice in quick succession in the first half before completing his hat-trick at the death to take his tally for the season by that time to 10 in seven games.

On November 29th, 2024, Ogam was awarded Tusker’s Player of the Month for October and November in recognition of his impressive goal-scoring form.

Ogam, who scooped the awards ahead of fellow finalists Shaphan Siwa, Charles Momanyi, and George Kaddu, told the club’s official website after the recognition: “I am thrilled to receive this award - it means a great deal to me,” Ogam said.

“I owe this achievement to my teammates, as I couldn’t have reached this point without their support. The coaches have also been instrumental in my progress. This recognition motivates me to continue working hard and scoring more goals.”

Tusker CEO Sam Nzau could not hide his shock at how Ogam had taken the Premier League by storm. “With hard work, consistency, and faith in God, there’s nothing we can’t achieve. I want to congratulate Ryan (Ogam) for his well-deserved recognition. His achievements are the result of his dedication, both on and off the pitch, where his discipline has been exemplary,” said Nzau.

Ogam on course to shatter Rupia’s goal mark

According to former international Boniface Ambani, Ogam's current form will no doubt push to shatter the record of 27 goals set by Rupia. Apart from Rupia, Ogam looks set to break the 26-goal mark set by former Gor Mahia striker Benson Omalla.

“He is on course,” Ambani told Flashscore. “Striker is all about consistency. That’s what makes a striker, he should keep cool, and continue to do what he is doing.

“As long as his team keeps on assisting him, and tries to avoid unnecessary cards and injuries. Anything is possible for him to break the standing record, he is an amazing player to watch and a very good player while inside the box, I like him most because he has the nose for goal.”

On managing 15 goals from 13 matches, Ambani, who played for the national team Harambee Stars, and was the top scorer with 20 goals for Tusker in the 2006 campaign, explained: “It’s a good run. Good one. Now it’s all about consistency now.”

Former Tusker and AFC Leopards player Noah Abich was lost for words to describe Ogam’s fine start to the season. He further admitted that he could score more than 30 goals at the end of the season.

“He (Ogam) is an incredible striker,” Abich told Flashscore. “He is a joy to watch, I believe he has shown he can end the season with more than goals.

“He has been scoring in almost every match for Tusker in the league and what is amazing about his scoring, is he comes out of matches with two goals, and it means if he keeps the momentum going then it will be easy for him to notch 30-plus goals.”

Abich continued: “I hope to see him stay injury-free and observe what he will have done at the end of the season, he is the player currently helping Tusker, they started badly this season but Ogam’s goals have helped them to move to the top of the table, amazing from the lad.”

Former Harambee Stars defender Taiwo Atieno admitted he had yet to watch Ogam in action, but his statistics so far this season indicate that he can break the record.

“That’s impressive,” Atieno replied to Flashscore when asked if Ogam could break the mark. “I haven’t seen him play so it’s hard to say. But based on his current form there’s a good chance.”

Meanwhile, his current coach at Tusker, Charles Okere, said on the player's target to score 15 goals at the halfway stage of the season: “Incredible from Ogam, he prayed to God to score 15 goals and he already has 15 goals.

“What I know is that Ogam will continue to score goals, he is a player, who takes instructions keenly and never plays under pressure, and he has very good positioning when inside the opponents' danger zone and can also dribble to score.”

A section of Kenyan fans tip Ogam for greatness

A section of Kenyan fans believes the youngster has what it takes to surpass Rupia’s goal mark in a season.

“He has good speed which Premier League defenders fear most... he can even surpass that mark of 27 goals,” said Innocent Mcg while Derence Ismael said: “Yes of course... he (Ogam) has the potential to break the mark and even surpass it.”

On the current top scorers’ chart, Ogam is followed by KCB forward Francis Kahiro and Shabana FC Brian Michira, who are both tied on eight goals each, while Kakamega Homeboyz forward Moses Shumah is third after notching seven goals.

Ogam recently earned a call to the national team for the 2025 Mapinduzi Cup, and he scored his first goal in the 1-0 win against Tanzania. Ogam will hope to continue with his goalscoring form when the Brewers take on Ulinzi Stars in their next league assignment at Dandora Stadium on Saturday, January 25th
