Kenya national team goalkeeper Patrick Matasi (37) has signed for Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League outfit Kakamega Homeboyz after leaving Kenya Police FC.

The former Posta Rangers custodian has been warming the bench at Police following a series of unconvincing performances which forced Burundian coach Etienne Ndayiragije to trust second choice Job Ochieng between the sticks.

Despite his poor form, Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula has confirmed they have acquired Matasi's services on a two-year contract.

"We have sealed the signing of Patrick (Matasi) after he agreed to join us on a two-year contract after leaving Police," Shimanyula told Flashscore. "We know he has not been performing to his best level at his former club but again I always believe that he deserves another chance to play again.

"He has promised to perform to his level best, we know players have those periods when their form is not good enough, so it doesn't mean you look down upon them, you give them another chance and that is why I have decided to give Matasi another chance to shine here at Homeboyz."

Shimanyula continued: "Our main target still remains to win the FKF Premier League title and the domestic cup at the end of the season and Matasi has promised to do his best and help us to reach our goal for the season."

The Homeboyz owner added: "He is our first signing of the current transfer window but we are looking at at least adding four to five new players in some specific departments (as per the request of the technical bench), to help us succeed in our mission to win the league and the domestic cup."

Matasi's predicaments started last year when former Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat overlooked him for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying fixtures against Zimbabwe and Namibia.

During the Group J fixtures, Kenya drew 1-1 against the Warriors of Zimbabwe and 0-0 against the Brave Warriors of Namibia.

Before the two matches, coach Firat had further dropped Matasi from the squad for the two-legged 2024 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifying fixture against South Sudan.

Though Kenya have already qualified by virtue of being the co-host, they failed to beat the Brights Stars, who won the first leg 2-0 in Juba before a 1-1 draw in the return leg saw South Sudan win the battle 3-1 on aggregate.

In an exclusive interview with Flashscore last year, following his omission from Harambee Stars, Matasi opened up about his tribulations with the former Moldova coach blaming him for tarnishing his career.

“In terms of my career, I think things were not moving on well, especially from CAF to the national team and what happened in the national team, I think it was something that I didn’t like and I will just be open and tell you the truth,” Matasi told Flashscore during the interview.

“This season or this year, before the game against Zimbabwe which we drew 0-0, we had played eight matches, scoring eight goals and conceding two goals against Burundi and against Zimbabwe during the Four-Nation tournament.

“When we started the AFCON qualifiers in Uganda, I didn't know what happened until coach Engin (Firat) did not want to field me, so after the game I questioned him.

"I gave him the facts and told him 'Coach, I have played eight matches, scored eight goals and two goals conceded, that is a good performance and last game against Ivory Coast in Malawi I produced a clean sheet, what happened?"

The acquisition of Matasi comes at a time when Homeboyz announced that leading gaming firm and club sponsor Mozzartbet Kenya Limited had renewed their affiliation with the club for the next year.

Homeboyz began its partnership with Mozzartbet Kenya with an initial three-year contract on December 29th, 2020, and on Monday marked its fifth year of engagement with the gaming firm.

Shimanyula expressed his joy at the restored collaboration with the leading gaming firm and backed the club to win the league title.

“With the renewal, we will make five additional signings during the mid-season transfer window with the aim of winning the FKF Premier League title,” he affirmed.

Homeboyz are currently lying eighth in the Premier League table with 26 points from 18 matches. Matasi could be in line to feature when they take on struggling Nairobi City Stars on Saturday, February 9th.
